American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Announces its 2018-19 Officers, Board
A. Thomas Indresano, DMD, FACS, began his term as the 101st president of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) during its Annual Meeting in October in Chicago.
ROSEMONT, Ill., Nov. 29, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- A. Thomas Indresano, DMD, FACS, began his term as the 101st president of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) during its Annual Meeting in October in Chicago.
Indresano – alongside AAOMS's other officers and the Board of Trustees – assumes leadership for 2018-19 of the professional organization representing more than 9,000 oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Indresano, of Naperville, Ill., served as President-Elect this past year and Vice President the previous year.
Before he retired as endowed professor and chair of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Pacific's Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, Indresano was a professor at the University of Illinois, University of Chicago, Case Western Reserve University and the Medical College of Wisconsin. He represented OMSs from nine states as the District VI Trustee on the AAOMS Board of Trustees for four years.
"I stand ready to begin my presidency after 100 great years of our organization," Indresano said. "We have traveled so far and achieved so much for this specialty. We have forged new paths and met challenges in the world of healthcare. I look forward to another year of outstanding achievements."
In 2016, Indresano was a member of the first class of single-degree OMSs inducted as fellows of the American College of Surgeons, the world's largest surgical organization. He received the Donald B. Osbon Award for an Outstanding Educator from AAOMS in 2005, and he was an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for six years and past president of the California, Great Lakes and Ohio societies of oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Indresano received his doctor of dental medicine degree from Harvard University and his training in OMS from Vanderbilt University. He succeeds Brett L. Ferguson, DDS, FACS, who will serve as Immediate Past President.
Other 2018-19 officers elected by the AAOMS House of Delegates are Victor L. Nannini, DDS, FACS, as President-Elect; B.D. Tiner, DDS, M.D., FACS, as Vice President; and Steven R. Nelson, DDS, MS, as Speaker of the House of Delegates. Charles A. Crago, DMD, M.D., was elected to the Board of Trustees and will serve District V's Midwestern states.
Nannini of Westbury, N.Y., served as Vice President last year after he was District I Trustee for four years. After more than 30 years in private practice, he moved to full-time faculty and is now Program Director of the Nassau University Medical Center Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program. He previously was chair of the New York OMS Political Action Committee for eight years and president of the New York State Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
Tiner of San Antonio, Texas, previously served as District V Trustee. He was a tenured associate professor and director of the residency program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He entered full-scope private OMS practice in 1996 in San Antonio. During the last 21 years, Alamo Maxillofacial Surgical Associates has grown from three surgeons to seven and from one office to three. He also served as a dental officer in the U.S. Navy for 25 years, retiring as a Captain in 2000.
Nelson of Greenwood Village, Colo., was elected to his 17th term as Speaker of the House of Delegates. He is a member of the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Center and practices at Nelson, Rollert and Wells Associates in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Denver. He is president of the Colorado Dental Lifeline Network and chair of the Small Donor Committee of the Colorado Dental Political Action Committee.
Crago of Fargo, N.D., has been an advocate for the specialty as chair of the AAOMS Committee on Governmental Affairs and independently with his members of Congress in North Dakota. He served as chair of the North Dakota OMS Political Action Committee (OMSPAC), and he received the 2011 OMSPAC Fundraiser of the Year Award and the 2018 John F. Freihaut Political Activist Award from AAOMS. Since 2015, Crago has been Caucus Chair for District V of the AAOMS House of Delegates. He has served as a Delegate for North Dakota and New Mexico and president of the North Dakota, New Mexico and Southwest societies of oral and maxillofacial surgeons. He is managing partner of Face and Jaw Surgeons, PC, an eight-surgeon group in multiple locations in North Dakota.
Paul J. Schwartz, DMD, of Dunkirk, Md.; J. David Morrison Jr., DMD, of Loveland, Ohio; Crago and Mark A. Egbert, DDS, FACS, of Kenmore, Wash.; were elected to two-year Trustee positions for Districts II, IV, V and VI, respectively. Other AAOMS Trustees are District I Trustee David Shafer, DMD, of Farmington, Conn., and District III Trustee Robert S. Clark, DMD, of Lexington, Ky.
