ACCC has helped over a million American consumers since co-founded in 1991 by the late Steven Trumble to provide budget counseling services to individual consumers. Mr. Trumble served as President and CEO of ACCC until his death in March 2021.
Today, ACCC is one of the leading nonprofit debt management and credit counseling agencies in the country. In 2009, ACCC was approved by the Executive Office for the United States Trustees (EOUST) to issue Pre- Bankruptcy Counseling Certificates and Post-Debtor education in compliance with the bankruptcy code. Consumers filing bankruptcy are required to be counseled before they can file a bankruptcy petition. Before a bankruptcy discharge, consumers must take a post-debtor education course.
In 2010, ACCC was approved by HUD to offer housing counseling services that include reverse mortgage counseling and an online first-time homebuyer certification program.

The book, co-authored by Steve Trumble and Katie Ross, provides a step-by-step guide that shares with consumers the fundamental elements of a healthy financial life – making the journey to financial healthy manageable and attainable. In March 2020, ACCC established the Financial Health Index to measure how American consumers were feeling about their financed and the overall U.S. economy during a time of economic disruption caused by the pandemic. This quarterly survey has allowed ACCC to understand and measure consumers' financial priorities and circumstances around income security, financial stability, and household debt.

"Building financial knowledge and security involves harnessing an array of resources to support and enable families to sustain themselves, thrive, and move up. With the launch of the virtual programming and through in-person workshops, ACCC has delivered nearly 400 workshops and financial coaching sessions, reaching 3500 consumers nationwide."
