An English family immigrates to a farm in Western Australia where they must endure many trials and tribulations
Winifred Millicent Hardie releases the historical novel, 'A Curlew Cried'
PERTH, Australia, May 18, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Helen Elizabeth Payne and Janet Anne Goldman announces the release of "A Curlew Cried" (published by Balboa Press AU), a historical novel set from 1911 to the outbreak of the Second World War in which an English family immigrates to a farm in Western Australia where they must endure many trials and tribulations. Their late mother, Winifred Millicent Hardie wrote this book over 40 years ago.
It is 1911 when Bill and Isobel Elgin scramble down from the Kalgoorlie Express with their family of six to begin a new life in the wheat lands of Western Australia. As they head to their farm in Bunburra to fulfill their dream of a better future, Isobel and her daughters lament over the dry, dusty, vermin-infested landscape that is vastly different from their former home in England. Still, they are determined to support the men in their family, no matter the personal sacrifices.
However, as they face one complex challenge after another, the entire Elgin family soon realizes that nothing in life is certain, especially when living in a land filled with brown snakes, questionable neighbors, and seemingly insurmountable obstacles that even shock the local clergy.
"This book was rediscovered after being in a filing cabinet for over 40 years. It speaks of the history, the hardships, and remoteness of the wheat and sheep country in Western Australia," Payne says. When asked what she wants readers to take away from the book, she answers, "even through the extreme emotional pressure and heartbreak, they were still able to find humor and snippets of happiness." About the Author
The late Winifred Millicent Hardie's own mother died when she was only 15 months old. She was raised by her maternal grandmother on a wheat farm in Western Australia. Her flair for writing came at a young age where she used to write stories for the Western Mail paper and that is how she met her husband, who also wrote stories for the same paper. They went under pen names of Silver Concha and Born In the Saddle. Friendly rivalry ensued of who would write the best story. They met in real life when her husband joined the Army at the outbreak of World War II. They became engaged before he went overseas. On his return, they married and went on to have two daughters.
