AP Takes Home Five ENR Best Project Awards at this Year's Ceremony

DENVER, Oct. 23, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Five Adolfson & Peterson Construction (AP) projects received awards for ENR's 2019 Best Projects competition across a seven-state region that includes Utah, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Aurora Central Recreation Center – First Place in the Sports/Entertainment Category

It had been 40 years since Aurora built a new recreational facility. This new 61,250-sf facility, designed by Populous, is in itself, an art. Unique amenities such as an interactive slide, the first of its kind in North America, have made the place an entertainment mecca. Through carefully detailed design features, high-end durable materials and exceptional craftsmanship, Central Recreation Center demonstrates the exceptional quality of construction. The community was at the heart of this project, and it shows in the finished product.

UNC Campus Commons – First Place in the Cultural/Worship Category

Campus Commons, designed by Semple Brown Design, is an innovative campus navigation and support center for students, a new gateway facility to welcome visitors and a showcase for the University's highly regarded music and theater programs. The theater and support areas are a dramatic reflection of UNC's outstanding performing arts and visual arts programs and the arts-rich community. It's complex rigging, lighting, controls, acoustics, fly gallery and custom AV layout is state-of-the-art in performance quality. The project's many unique features make this a one-of-a-kind project, presenting challenges this project team has never seen before and likely won't again.

New Wiggins High School and Middle School – First Place in the K-12 Education Category

Imagine a school building constructed in 1948, one without heat or air conditioning—students traveling between classes wearing blankets and heavy coats. Until 2019, this was the reality for students attending Wiggins High School. Now, thanks to a bond passed in 2015 and resounding community support, nearly 550 students attending classes in the new Wiggins Middle School and High School experience a top-notch educational environment—one that sets precedence for what schools on Colorado's Eastern Plains can achieve. This new facility, designed by Hord Coplan Macht, was constructed with students' best interests in mind—from a daily learning environment to campus safety.

Hudson Elementary Addition and Renovation – Merit in the K-12 Education Category

A buried gym, unexpected groundwater, an irrigation ditch and 60 semi-loads of dirt and waste couldn't stop AP from completing the Hudson Elementary School Additions and Renovation project on time and under budget. Designed by TreanorHL, the Hudson project technically began in 2008, although funding wasn't available until 2014. AP spent nearly 10 years working with the district and the Hudson community to secure the necessary funding through a voter-driven bond measure and Colorado BEST program. The project included the addition and renovation of the existing active and occupied elementary school. The addition consisted of a 2-story, 37,801-sf structural steel and masonry building that includes new classrooms, a media center, STEM lab, music room, art room and administrative spaces.

Franklin Medical Office Building Elevator Addition – Merit in the Small Project (Under $10M) Category

The most recent challenge facing Kaiser Permanente's 20th Avenue Medical Campus, the Franklin Building, was that patient throughput exceeded the capacity that the three existing elevators could accommodate. This problem led to extensive wait times for patients and staff needing to make their way up and down the tower. In addition, the three existing elevators were too small to allow for gurneys, meaning all patients had to be transported in wheelchairs. The solution of a new 1,125-sf elevator addition, designed by Davis Partnership Architects sounds simple, but was anything but easy, hiding the complexity and effort involved in designing and building this big-little project.

A panel of 12 judges from all areas of the industry—architects, GCs, green consultants, virtual designers and engineers—selected winners and merit awards from the 156 total entries this year, by far the most in the 19-year history of the awards.
