AquaBlok Expands Availability of Sediment Remediation Resources Related to Use/Application of Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC)

These resources are intended to support those within in the sediment remediation industry, specifically for projects utilizing PAC.

The use of activated carbon amendments for in-situ treatment and reactive capping as a viable alternative to dredging of contaminated sediment has gained increased acceptance by industry and regulators. Many laboratory studies and field applications have demonstrated activated carbon's capability to sequester hydrophobic organic compounds such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dioxin and pesticides in sediment.

SedimentPure Modeling Tool

• AquaBlok assisted CABOT in the development of an online modeling tool, which predicts the performance of PAC (NORIT SedimentPure) and granular activated carbon (GAC) for reactive capping on a range of contaminants in sediment remediation applications. It is intended to simplify the complexity of the CAPSIM Model under a set of realistic field scenarios. It also identifies factors that influence the performance and efficacy of activated carbon in different forms under a range of conditions.

Demonstration of In Situ Treatment with Reactive Amendments for Contaminated Sediments in Active DoD Harbors Bremerton, WA AquaGate+PAC Report.

• In this extensive report, AquaGate+PAC was used to address PCBs in the sediment at the Navy's Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintainence Facility. The use of AquaBlok+PAC resulted in a 94% reduction in PCBs in tissues of marine species. This project resulted in an ESTCP Project of the Year award.

In Situ Wetland Restoration Demonstration: Canal Creek, Aberdeen MD.

• At this project site, AquaGate+PAC was tested against a PAC slurry and an engineered manufactured soil cover system in a field demonstration of in situ wetland remediation technologies. The site was contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Post-treatment results showed significantly lowered concentrations of PCBs in pore water and benthic tissue in treatment plots where AquaGate+PAC was used.
