Aquasana under sink and countertop water filters remove up to 99.6% of microplastics as new survey reveals nearly nine in ten Americans have concerns about microplastics in their drinking water
AUSTIN, Texas, June 20, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Aquasana, a leading maker of high-performance water filtration solutions for the home, today announced the company's award-winning under sink and countertop water filtration systems are now tested and certified to remove up to 99.6% of microplastics from tap water. This comes on the heels of a recent national survey conducted by Aquasana, which found that nearly nine in ten Americans (89%) are at least somewhat concerned about microplastics in their drinking water. According to the study, which polled 2,414 U.S. adults in April 2023, only 6% of the U.S. population said they're not familiar with the contaminant.
According to Greenpeace, less than 5% of household plastic waste in the U.S. is recycled. It's estimated that one-third of all plastic waste ends up in soils or freshwater. Most of this plastic disintegrates into particles smaller than five millimeters long – known as microplastics – and they're found everywhere, including in bottled water and 94% of tap water in America. In addition to driving plastic pollution, bottled water contains excessive amounts of microplastics, reportedly 50% more than tap water. One study found up to 10,000 pieces of microplastic in a single bottle from a leading U.S. bottled water brand.
"Reducing plastic pollution has been a priority for Aquasana for over two decades," said Derek Mellencamp, general manager of Aquasana. "In addition to significantly reducing single-use plastic waste by replacing up to 12,000 disposable plastic bottles of water per year, our high-performance under sink and countertop water filtration systems take it one step further by stripping microplastics from tap water for cleaner, healthier drinking water from the faucet at home."
While most Americans have concerns about microplastics in their drinking water, the younger generations – who will inherit the repercussions from the compounding plastic pollution crisis – indicated the most distress when polled. Per the survey results, Gen Z and Millennials are 29% more likely than Gen X and Baby Boomers to say they are concerned about microplastics being in their drinking water (44% vs. 34%). Additionally, parents are 23% more likely than non-parents to say they are "very concerned" about microplastics in their drinking water (27% vs. 22%).
"It's clear that Americans are paying attention to microplastics and their impact on the environment and our well-being," added Mellencamp. "We remain committed to leading the charge in identifying and becoming certified to remove harmful contaminants as they emerge, from PFOA/PFOS to lead, microplastics and beyond."
Aquasana's patented technology uses Claryum® filtration to remove up to 99.9% of 78 contaminants, including lead, the "forever chemicals" PFOA/PFOS, asbestos, microplastics, pharmaceuticals, herbicides, pesticides, mercury, chlorine, chloramines and more. This includes the company's all new Clean Water Machine, an electric countertop system that instantly removes 15 times more contaminants than the leading pitcher filter, five times faster, at the push of a button – zero installation required. Also included is the OptimH2O® Reverse Osmosis + Claryum® system, which combines Claryum® and RO technologies to now reduce 89 contaminants with the addition of microplastics.
