Arizona Orthopedic Practice Expands Care to Treat Rising Youth Football and Basketball Injuries
Phoenix, Arizona (PRWEB) February 28, 2016 -- Orthopedic physicians at OrthoArizona – Arizona Orthopaedic Associates are expanding their youth-sports-related care to meet the growing number of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in youths.
With as many as 50 percent of all basketball- and football-related injuries in youth sports preventable, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), early detection and treatment are critical, say the doctors at OrthoArizona - Arizona Orthopaedic Associates (AOA).
Knee, ankle, and shoulder injuries count among the most common injuries experienced by young athletes who participate in football and basketball and affect both male and female athletes.
Injuries are often worsened when young athletes continue to play with injured bones and joints, making it essential that athletes communicate possible injuries early.
“It’s important to keep communication open between young athletes and coaches, and athletes and their parents,” said Michael Domer, MD. “Anytime an athlete feels a pull or strain in a joint, they should take precautions and inform their coaches and parents who should take steps to ensure that a possible injury isn’t serious before allowing practice or play to continue.”
ACL tears, a frequently experienced knee injury often caused by overuse, is a serious injury associated with agility sports. Each year, more than 70 percent of the reported ACL tears are attributed to playing football or basketball.
“With so much pivoting and cutting required during running in both football and basketball, we’re seeing more ACL injuries across the board,” said Robert Berghoff, MD. “The orthopedic doctors at AOA are seeing an increase in ACL injuries in girls' basketball as well.
“Unfortunately, an ACL injury can mean the end of a promising athletic career. That’s why it’s important to report possible ACL tears and treat tears as soon as they happen.”
Early diagnosis and treatment can mean less downtime, depending on the seriousness of the injury.
