Artists are often asked to donate work to charity auctions. Plenty of artists can and do donate outright. However, there are many who rely on their artistic talent as a main source of income and who cannot spare the potential revenue from any given work of art. There is a growing trend of organizations adding a caveat to their donation request that allows the artist to choose the level of donation they would like to make if their piece sells at auction. (For instance, 100%, 50% or anything above wholesale price.) This allows the artist to, at the very least, recoup the sunk costs of time, training, talent and materials it takes to create an original work of art. Topher has embraced this model as his digital paintings are printed on a metal substrate at great cost—this allows him to participate in a win-win-win scenario where he does not lose money but the charity still benefits and the donors are motivated to bid on high quality works of art.
