JANE GOLDEN, FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MURAL ARTS PHILADELPHIA
Jane Golden has been the driving force of Mural Arts Philadelphia since 1984, overseeing its growth from a small city agency into the nation's largest public art program, a global model for transforming public spaces and individual lives through art. Under Golden's direction, Mural Arts has created more than 4,000 works of public art through innovative collaborations with community-based organizations, city agencies, nonprofit organizations, schools, the private sector and philanthropies. In partnership with a range of city agencies, she has developed groundbreaking and rigorous programs that work through art to make strides in youth education, restorative justice and behavioral health.
Golden has also overseen a series of increasingly complex, ambitious and award-winning public art projects as well as launched the knowledge-sharing Mural Arts Institute in 2017. Sought after nationally and internationally as an expert on urban transformation through art, Golden has received numerous awards for her work including the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowship Award, the Philadelphia Award, the Hepburn Medal from the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center at Bryn Mawr College and Philadelphia Magazine's Trailblazer Award.
In 2018, she received the Anne d'Harnoncourt Award for Artistic Excellence from the Arts + Business Council of Greater Philadelphia and the Dare to Understand Award from the Interfaith Center of Greater Philadelphia. She is an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania and serves on the Mayor's Cultural Advisory Council, the Penn Museum Advisory Committee and the board of directors of The Heliotrope Foundation.
LAURE BIRON, PORCH LIGHT DIRECTOR, MURAL ARTS PHILADELPHIA
Laure Biron joined Mural Arts Philadelphia in 2008 as a teaching artist, sparking an interest in social justice and behavioral health. After completing a master's at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Laure attended the Bryn Mawr School of Social work and Social Research, where she completed a field placement with the Restorative Justice Department Guild Program at Mural Arts.
After 3 years with the Restorative Justice department and completing a master's in social service with a clinical focus and a master's in legal and social policy, Laure started her own private psychotherapy practice and became the Director of the Porch Light Program, a partnership between Mural Arts and the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services that offers programming and projects rooted in behavioral health and community wellness.
The Mural Arts Philadelphia Porch Light program focuses on achieving universal health and wellness among Philadelphians, especially those dealing with mental health issues or trauma. Opportunities are provided to contribute to meaningful works of public art through programs in behavioral health provider settings, community spaces and along commercial corridors in storefront initiatives. The Southeast by Southeast, Northeast Passage and Kensington Porch Light Storefronts are collaborations that serve folks in need in three neighborhoods in Philadelphia by layering art classes, public art making and connections to social services all in one public storefront space.
LISA MURCH, ART EDUCATION DIRECTOR, PHILADELPHIA MURAL ARTS
Under Lisa Murch's guidance, the Art Education program at Mural Arts Philadelphia is dedicated to "empowering youth to be leaders through art making." In-school and after-school arts-based programs are offered to more than 2,000 students at 25 sites across Philadelphia. Students participate in a wide variety of activities, studying subjects ranging from entrepreneurship to environmental stewardship through an artistic lens.
Through this program, art is a channel for discovery, prompting personal and communal experiences that can shape a student's future. Art Education murals and projects are visible across Philadelphia, providing students with concrete evidence of their creative work in city neighborhoods.
