Manchester, NH (PRWEB) October 08, 2013 -- As of September 5, 2013, The United States Department of Commerce, Information Technology Laboratory (ITL), and The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have released the latest version of FIPS 201-2 (Federal Information Processing Standards) to the general public. (See: FIPS 201-2). This document revisits the general architectural and technical requirements that federal agencies/organizations must implement as part of their Smart Card Systems as mandated by the Homeland Security Directive-12 (HSPD-12), which was originally instated back on August 27, 2004. Organizations with individuals wishing to gain access to Federally controlled facilities, as well as logical access to government information systems, must adhere to these standards to allow for the maximum level of safety and security.

For example, in cases where identity proofing for PIV Card issuance is performed prior to verification of employment authorization, departments and agencies may choose to require the applicant to provide identity source documents that satisfy the requirements of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, in addition to the requirements specified in this section. It is recommended that departments and agencies perform electronic verification of identity source documents, where possible…”
