The Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC)-Atlantic and Astrapi Corporation executed a Limited Purpose Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (LP-CRADA) to explore Astrapi’s Spiral Modulation.

Astrapi Corporation is pleased to announce the execution of a Limited Purpose Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (LP-CRADA) with the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) – Atlantic to explore Astrapi Corporation’s Spiral Modulation. Spiral Modulation provides a technology to dramatically increase the flexibility of communication systems symbol waveform design and to use this additional flexibility to address key spectral efficiency challenges in telecommunications. This initial LP-CRADA targets exploration and validation of Astrapi’s simulation and first-generation Software Defined Radio (SDR) results and establishing a research pathway for collaboration on second generation SDR development.

“This engagement enables Astrapi to validate our early research and then extend our work into our second-generation Software Defined Radios. We are demonstrating a 3-4dB, over a factor of two, reduction in required signal power for matched communication performance,” said Dr. Jerrold Prothero, Astrapi Founder and CEO. “We are delighted to begin this project with NIWC that aims to support crucial defense and commercial communication needs.

Spiral Modulation provides benefits for a wide variety of commercial and defense communication networks, including satellite, defense, mobile, and Internet-of-Things. Astrapi is now actively establishing technology transition relationships to deploy Spiral Modulation into modems, radios, terminals, smart devices, and sensors.”

A critical and often limiting problem for any communication system is the required signal power needed to transmit increasing amounts of data. Spiral Modulation has demonstrated considerable promise for effectively supporting low-power communication through dramatically higher spectral efficiency.
