Astrapi selected to present Advanced RF Crosslink Capability in the SATCOM Transport Layer through Spiral Modulation

"It is amazing to be a part of the transformation to bring in innovative new ideas and speed up the acquisition process. The AFWERX program has enabled us to identify multiple use-cases, customers, teaming partners, and transition paths for Spiral Modulation.." - Jerrold Prothero, CEO

The USAF has accepted Astrapi Corporation to participate in the upcoming DoD Commercial Space Partnerships Showcase the week of September 28, 2020. Over eighty USAF subject matter experts and evaluators vetted over eight hundred submissions.

Astrapi will have a digital booth showcasing Spiral Modulation utilizing a highly interactive website. Guests and evaluators will be able to actively engage with Astrapi through the site.

Additionally, acceptance provides a private 1:1 pitch to specific subject matter experts within the USAF community.

The Showcase will combine all four open Space Challenges: DoD Commercial Space Partnerships, Persistent ISR, Space Asset Resiliency, and Global Space Transport and Delivery. Combining all four Space Challenges into one larger showcase is quite beneficial for Astrapi as Spiral Modulation is an enabling technology and increased exposure and participation provides a broader, well-qualified audience for the Astrapi team. This unique showcase is designed to accelerate Astrapi and the other accepted companies with pathways to contracts or agreements with the Department of the Air Force or other DoD service branches. pitch and the public showcase to offer you the best opportunity of being one of the teams that progresses.

Dr. Jerrold Prothero, Astrapi Founder and CEO, stated, “We are quite excited to be selected. Astrapi was in the inaugural AFWERX Phase I SBIR cohort and was one of a few companies selected for the very first Air Force Pitch Day in New York. It is amazing to be a part of the transformation to bring in innovative new ideas and speed up the acquisition process. The AFWERX program has enabled us to identify multiple use-cases, customers, teaming partners, and transition paths for Spiral Modulation. Our Software Defined Radio results suggest Spiral Modulation will be able to match the 3-4 dB, validated reduction in required signal power that we have been able to demonstrate in simulation. Those results are quite encouraging since we have not yet fully optimized our approach and we have now migrated to a second-generation prototype using the state-of-the-art Xilinx UltraScale+ RF System-on-a-Chip platform.”

Astrapi’s Spiral Modulation provides an innovative, structured way to dramatically improve the utilization of spectrum for telecommunications. The additional capabilities address key problems in contested environments faced by the USAF such as Low Probability of Interception and Detection (LPI/LPD) and anti-jamming of signals, as well as providing additional data throughput enabling high-definition Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. Lower required signal power also enables reduced Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) requirements for both manned and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Spiral Modulation is also being developed for commercial satellite VSAT applications, funded in part by a SBIR Phase II grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Spiral Modulation is a dual-use technology that addresses commercial satellite, backhaul, terrestrial wireless, and Internet-of-Things applications.

ABOUT Astrapi Corporation
Astrapi is the pioneer of Spiral Modulation, which opens an unexplored area for innovation at the core of telecommunications. Currently Astrapi has nine patents issued, with more pending and with international coverage. Based on a generalization of Euler’s formula, the foundational mathematics for telecom, Astrapi provides fundamentally new ways to optimize the use of spectrum. By applying new mathematics to signal modulation, Astrapi is able to improve the trade-off between the four fundamental parameters in telecommunications: bandwidth, signal power, data throughput, and error rate. The resulting efficiency translates into higher spectral performance with more bits available at a lower cost.

ABOUT the United States Air Force Space Challenge
The AFWERX Space Challenge initiative is made up of four challenges targeted at creating integrated space operations leveraging the best in technology while maintaining security, being resilient and increasing agility. Four challenges are running concurrently but are focused on separate topics:

  • Fortifying Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance efforts in advance of the future’s approaching threats
  • Ensuring our space assets can survive and thrive in their unique environment and against enemy danger for years to come
  • Reimagining delivery systems and discover what is possible with space transport
  • Magnifying the capabilities of the DoD by expanding and strengthening its commercial portfolio
