Portland, OR (PRWEB) May 23, 2014 -- While national Tinnitus Awareness Week may end tomorrow, the effort to treat and cure tinnitus continues, unabated, year-round. The next major calendar item for tinnitus patients and their supporters is the American Tinnitus Association's 2014 Jack A. Vernon Walk to Silence Tinnitus, an annual charity event to increase public awareness and resources for tinnitus. This year's walk takes place Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Mary S. Young State Park in West Linn, OR.
Named in memory of ATA's co-founder, Jack A. Vernon, Ph.D., the Walk to Silence Tinnitus is both a physical event and a virtual fundraiser. People in the metropolitan Portland area are encouraged to register for the free event and enjoy a leisurely walk and barbecue. Those who are not able to attend the walk can show their solidarity with the cause by donating to one of ATA's official walk teams. All proceeds support ATA's research and support programs.
"Whether you walk or donate, this is a fun way to get involved with ATA's mission to end tinnitus," said Cara James, Executive Director of the American Tinnitus Association. "We want and need the support of the entire tinnitus community: patients, patient supporters, healthcare providers, and researchers. Only through widespread support will we have the means to improve services for tinnitus patients and continue our search for an ultimate cure to this awful condition."
Over 45 million Americans have some form of tinnitus, and almost 20 million have burdensome symptoms. Tinnitus is also the number one service-related disability reported by U.S. military veterans. Despite these facts, the condition remains poorly understood and receives scant public research funding. The American Tinnitus Association strives to remedy this situation through public education, patient support, and advanced research funding. The Jack A.
