ATB Supermarkets: The Ongoing Penetron Success Story in Ukraine
The newest ATB supermarket - part of Ukraine's most popular discount market chain - opened its doors in September 2018 in Kharkov. PENETRON ADMIX was used to ensure a waterproofing solution for the store's concrete water tanks and basement structures.

PENETRON ADMIX was used to ensure a waterproofing solution for the store's concrete water tanks and basement structures.
The largest supermarket chain in Ukraine, Agrotechbiznes (ATB) opened its first discount market in 1993. By the early 2000s, the "ATB" network had perfected a market concept – a discount store with a wide assortment of goods at wholesale prices – that was completely new to the country at that time. A combination of convenient store locations and high-quality products helped ATB find rapid acceptance among consumers. In less than 25 years, the company grew into the largest retail firm in the country. Today, the ATB network has over 900 stores in 237 towns across Ukraine – and continues to grow rapidly.
Collaborating for a Permanent Solution
Most recently, the Kharkov store was planning the construction of large concrete water tanks for the fire protection system. During the early stages of the project, Waterproofing Services, the local Penetron representative, worked with the project engineers on the design and installation of the waterproof concrete tanks.
"Of course, we discussed the issue of waterproofing, but the solution also needed to be quick to implement and provide a self-healing capability for any cracks in the matrix, and the results needed to be long-lasting," explains Maxim Khodakovsky, Director of Waterproofing Services. "Penetron crystalline materials met these requirements perfectly."
The final solution for the ATB supermarket incorporated a range of Penetron products: PENETRON ADMIX was added to the concrete mix for the tanks, as well as the concrete basement structures. PENEBAR SW waterstop strips were used to permanently seal the construction joints in the tanks and the basement, and PENECRETE MORTAR was applied to close up the tie-holes in the new concrete. The application work was done on-site by Waterproofing Services.
Crystalline Network Enhances Impermeability
Penetron crystalline products are formulated to react with key concrete components to produce an integral crystalline network that enhances impermeability of the concrete and reduces drying shrinkage and the effects of chemical attacks and freeze-thaw cycles. Also, the service life of PENETRON ADMIX-treated concrete is about three times that of conventional concrete.
