Atmail's acquisition of Virgin Media's consumer email service provides a responsible long-term solution for customers who wish to retain their existing addresses, while enabling Virgin Media to exit legacy email operations, remove associated cost and risk, and focus investment on its core connectivity services.
Agreement reflects a growing telecommunications industry trend to divest or retire legacy email services.
LONDON, Sept. 24, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Atmail has agreed to acquire Virgin Media's consumer email service and take responsibility for its ongoing operation through Junara, one of Atmail's consumer email brands. The agreement will allow customers who choose to move to Junara to keep their existing Virgin Media email address, supported by an email specialist with nearly 30 years of experience.
The agreement comes as telecommunications companies around the world increasingly review whether operating consumer email remains central to their businesses.
Transferring an established email service to a specialist provider can offer a responsible path forward: customers can be given continuity, choice and dedicated support, while the telecommunications provider focuses attention and investment on broadband, mobile and other connectivity services.
Virgin Media said: "As we focus and prioritise our investments and resource on ensuring our customers have the best connectivity experience, we have taken the decision to transfer the remaining Virgin Media email accounts. We're transferring our email service to Junara, a specialist cloud-based email provider owned by Atmail, giving users a clear route to keep their existing Virgin Media email address if they choose to.
"We are writing directly to all impacted customers to clearly explain the changes and will provide a 45-day window to either sign up with Junara, move to an alternative email provider, or close their account. To support users through this transition, all current Virgin Media customers wishing to move to Junara will receive their first year of service free of charge"
Across its corporate group, Atmail has completed email divestments involving more than 40 major brands across 10 countries and migrated millions mailboxes. The Virgin Media agreement builds on this experience and reflects a broader structural change across the sector: as telecommunications businesses concentrate on their core connectivity products, specialist providers are increasingly well placed to operate established consumer email services.
"Virgin Media has taken a considered approach to the future of its email service, giving customers clear choices and time to decide. We are pleased to have reached an agreement that will allow Atmail, through Junara, to offer continued service to customers who want to keep their existing email address."
"This is exactly the role a specialist provider can play as telecommunications companies sharpen their focus on connectivity: providing a dedicated, long-term home for email services that remain important to their customers," said Dave Richards, Chief Executive Officer, Atmail.
Virgin Media will communicate directly with affected customers in phases, providing information about their options, key dates and the support available. Virgin Media has published a blog https://news.virginmediao2.co.uk/helping-customers-understand-upcoming-changes-to-their-virgin-media-email-services/ with further detail on the upcoming changes. Customers will have time to decide what is right for them, and the transition will be carried out progressively to support service continuity.
Customers who want to retain their existing Virgin Media email address will be able to sign up with Junara. Alternatively, they may download their emails and data and move to another provider of their choice, or simply close their email account.
