ATTN Drake: Toronto Tech Co-Founders Take #InMyFeelingsChallenge to Top of CN Tower

Uberflip welcomes marketers from around the world to its annual conference Conex and urges Drake to help highlight how awesome the 6ix is with a cameo

My goal was to get Drake’s attention so we had to go big. Our conference is the same week as Drake’s concert in Toronto, and given our music theme at our conference, I figured it would be the coolest thing ever if Drake made a cameo.

Unless someone has done the #InMyFeelingsChallenge while jumping out of a plane, the co-founders of Uberflip, a Toronto-based content experience platform, believe they now hold the record for performing the viral “Shiggy” dance at the highest point to date. Earlier this week, Randy Frisch and Yoav Schwartz took what is known as the #DoTheShiggy dance to the top of the CN Tower where they performed the now famous moves that go along with Drake’s latest hit, “In My Feelings,” 1,168 feet above the ground.

The goal was simple, explained Frisch, Uberflip’s CMO: “We’re marketers, and marketers do whatever it takes to capture their audience. We had two audiences: Drake and the 700+ other marketers coming to Toronto for our conference next week, Conex: The Content Experience.” Frisch explained that the theme of the conference is “Remix Your Content,” so they challenged speakers to submit their best #InMyFeelingsChallenge video to kick off the conference. The submissions were so good that Frisch began to think of a way to top them all.

“The inspiration really came from Will Smith, who performed the dance as he climbed on the very top of a bridge in Budapest for the video,” said Frisch. Although he first thought about recording the video on top of their office in downtown Toronto, he didn’t think it would be unique enough. “My goal was to get Drake’s attention so we had to go big. Our conference is the same week as Drake’s concert in Toronto, and given our music theme at our conference, I figured it would be the coolest thing ever if Drake made a cameo.”

Given that co-founders are like family, Frisch asked Yoav Schwartz, Uberflip’s CEO, if he’d join. “At first my answer was no—I thought this was just another ‘Randy idea’ that would fade. But he did make a good point that he was not a good dancer and that he needed someone out there who could sing and carry a tune,” joked Schwartz. “Kidding aside, we’re all about delivering amazing experiences and I quickly realized this was something the attendees of our conference would remember, even if Drake did not take notice.”

On August 14, the two dads kissed their kids and wives goodbye early in the morning and made their way to the CN Tower EdgeWalk. The team at the EdgeWalk agreed to play along and helped produce the footage that has since been posted to all of the Uberflip social channels. There were some rules: no jumping, no skipping, and they were limited to the iconic red EdgeWalk suits for apparel. “The first Shiggy video was performed in a pink jumpsuit, which happens to be our brand color,” explained Schwartz. “So we were a bit disappointed in red, but I was proud of our ability to perform at that height, literally leaning over the edge of the CN Tower.”

The video, designed to entertain, shows the team’s commitment to delivering a great experience no matter what height they must go.

The two still hope Drake will take notice as they aim to get this video to go viral. Their conference, Conex: The Content Experience, takes place at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto on August 21-22 and brings out digital, demand, and content marketers. “The good news is we’re on target to have the 700 attendees we planned for, but if Drake decides to join, the venue fits up to 1,200 so we’re all set,” said Frisch with his fingers crossed.
