Austin Trout Returns to Ring Oct. 14 for World Title Fight vs. Jarrett Hurd
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Oct. 10, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- After a long 17-month layoff, former WBA Super Welterweight titlist Austin Trout, looks to claim another belt when he takes on current IBF Light Middleweight champion Jarrett Hurd this Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
"They think they're gonna catch me rusty," Trout told CagedMinds.com in a recent interview. "There is no-ring rust-- I've knocked it out with my work [during training camp]."
A Maryland native, Hurd (20-0, 14KOs), will be making his first defense of the 154lb. IBF title; a belt which he claimed by dramatic ninth round technical knockout over Tony Harrison in February of this year.
"We know who we're up against," said Hurd of Trout on a recent conference call. "He's a great fighter and this is something I need under my belt to solidify me as one of the greats."
In the 27-year-old Hurd, Trout (30-3, 14KOs) of Las Cruces, New Mexico, faces a man five years younger, 3.5 inches taller, and a fighter with a 4.5 inch longer reach. This is a similar challenge to the one he saw in his last bout for the same title against Jermall Charlo in May of 2016.
"He's never fought anyone like me; amateur or pro but I've fought people better than him," said Trout. "Does he have that 'it' factor? Well we're gonna see October 14 because I've got that 'it' factor!"
In Trout, 32, Hurd will be taking on his first former world champion, and the most talented opponent of his career. Initially claiming the 154lb. WBA belt in February of 2011, Trout successfully defended the title four times during a string of fights that included a win over future Hall of Famer Miguel Cotto in New York.
Trout's experience and Hurd's physical advantages make this a very compelling bout whose winner will jump to the top of boxing's 154lb. division.
"He's going to be ready for 12 rounds, so I feel like this fight is going to be more technical and whoever the smarter guy in the ring is will win," said Hurd.
Hurd vs. Trout kicks off the Saturday, Oct. 14 tripleheader boxing card on Showtime. The card also includes two additional title fights featuring Erislandy Lara vs. Terrell Gausha and Jermell Charlo vs. Erickson Lubin. Coverage begins at 10pmET.
