Australian Brand MADE FOR MAN™ Promoting Positive Masculinity
"Positive masculinity is about helping to encourage men to look after themselves and not see it as a weakness or an embarrassment to address their health problems." The MADE FOR MAN FOUNDATION Ltd. will be making every effort to work towards increasing awareness and promoting positive role model values. The next generations of Australian men deserve to grow up in a world that rewards positive masculinity and rejects conforming to the impossible standards of toxic masculinity.
MELBOURNE, Sept. 15, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Lifeline publishes statistics that show that 75% of people who take their own life are male, and suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians between the ages of 15 and 44. For each of those lives lost, up to 135 people are impacted, including family members, work colleagues, friends and first responders.
For the past couple of decades, psychologists have been uncovering the link between traditional masculinity and poor mental health.
Research combining data from 74 studies, comprising nearly 20,000 subjects has concluded that those who conform closely to traditional, "toxic" notions of masculinity were more likely to have poor mental health outcomes. They were also less likely to seek help.
As a result of these findings, mental health organisations have become focused on tackling toxic masculinity in our communities.
The mythology around mateship and the "Australian bloke" and unrealistic expectations of what it is to "be a man" has created a culture here that is riddled with toxic masculinity. Australian premium men's grooming and self care brand, MADE FOR MAN™ is fighting against this with a counter message of Love, Respect and Honesty.
"Positive masculinity works to combat the large-scale issues that toxic masculinity can lead to," says Founder and CEO Nick Stojanovski, "Such as domestic violence, violence against the LGBTQ+ community, suicide, bullying, substance abuse and the general neglect of men's physical health."
"I started the MADE FOR MAN™ Foundation in order to help support initiatives and organisations that actively promote positive masculinity with the goal to better support men and the wider community as whole."
What Is Toxic Masculinity?
Toxic masculinity manifests in many different ways. Ultimately, it stems from the pressure put on men to act in a certain manner, to be seen as a "valid" male within their society.
Men who conform to these pressures are more likely to feel hostile, lonely, and les likely to have the benefits of strong, loving social bonds. Strongly linked to poor mental health for men, is the notion of "self reliance" and the preference to not seek help when they need it.
What is Positive Masculinity?
Positive masculinity is all about rejecting the narrow-minded view of what it means to be a man. It encourages emotional vulnerability, moral fortitude and empathy. Positive masculinity boosts men's confidence in taking care of themselves, and behaving naturally rather than feeling they have to stick to gender expectations.
A large component of positive masculinity, as stated by the author and contributor to The God Man Project, Maeve Allen, is not being ashamed to embrace traditionally feminine qualities. This includes self-care, expressing emotions, talking about how they are feeling, and taking the time to listen and empathise with their friends and family (especially their male peers).
At this time of extraordinary levels of pressure and stress in relation to the pandemic and the many lockdowns across the country, mental health has become an important topic of discussion.
Positive masculinity aids not only mental and emotional health but also physical wellbeing. Australian men are more likely to get sick from serious health issues than Australian women; men visit the doctor less frequently, have shorter visits, and tend to seek medical advice for illnesses at a much later stage.
"Men have traditionally held onto the belief that there is 'strength in silence'," said Mr Stojanovski. "The idealisation of being 'tough' and not asking for help has to change, for good of all our society."
"Positive masculinity is about helping to encourage men to look after themselves and not see it as a weakness or an embarrassment to address their health problems."
The next generations of Australian men deserve to grow up in a world that rewards positive masculinity and rejects conforming to the impossible standards of toxic masculinity.
The MADE FOR MAN™ Foundation is making every effort to work towards this future. The foundation receives 5% of every sale of MADE FOR MAN™ products to support organisations and initiatives in the community making a positive difference.
