Based on the true story of her great aunt, K H Rafferty's new book contains fame, fortune, lust, fraud, blackmail, murder, prosecution, institutionalization in a mental hospital, and ten marriages
PROSPECT, Ky., July 11, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- When she was young, author K H Rafferty stumbled onto a photograph of her great-aunt, Evelyn Fariss. After learning that Fariss was a silent movie star, Rafferty was thrilled, but as she matured and she began to research her family history, Rafferty eventually pieced together a biographical story that was full of twists and turns.
In "Sister E X," Rafferty tells the story in the first person, using Fariss' voice to detail how the exploitation that ended her adolescence led her to a new beginning filled with ups and downs. She narrates a career path that began with the Ziegfeld Follies on Broadway in New York City and continued with offers to play significant parts in silent movies such as "Tess of the Storm Country," starring Mary Pickford. But it was not long before poor decisions in life and love soon turned her fortunes into misfortunes and made her name more infamous than famous, including claims she had a child with a rich suitor when she actually found the child at an orphanage.
"As a child, I saw a beautiful picture of a woman from the 1920's and inquired who she was and discovered she was a family member," said Rafferty. "After plenty of pre-internet research and talking in depth to a former curator from the Tampa Tribune, I decided my great-aunt had a very profound story and I wanted to share it."
Much of Rafferty's research was done the old-fashioned way, before the internet was available. She spent decades rummaging through family records and flying around the country digging up any information she could find. Sister E X is a biography that details a young woman's endless quest for fame, fortune, and love as she searched to fill the void left by her stolen childhood.
"As I became determined to write a novel based on Evelyn's life, I channeled her, to tell the story in her voice," said Rafferty. "In this way, I can honor her memory and give her the respect she so richly deserves."
