NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 14, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- What do Amazon best-selling author Mark S. Lewis, and Ali Brown, the director of the non-profit organization, BYOBikes, have in common? They both believe that spreading positivity and giving back to the community are the keys to success in life and in business.
Lewis' book, GIVE A DAMN - The Ticket to Cultural Change, promotes his belief that traditional values such as honesty, trust, accountability, responsibility, altruism, respect, and integrity are the foundation of moral wealth and prosperity; and these traits also lead to a more fulfilling life! He explains that individuals and businesses who embrace the GIVE A DAMN! philosophy - the commitment to putting others' needs before self, will help lift our communities and society-at-large.
BYOBikes, the brainchild of Ali and her father, Robin Tate, is a 501(3)(c) organization that embodies the GIVE A DAMN ideal by teaching people to build bicycles to give away to at-risk youth. A native New Orleanian, Ali Brown lived in Tampa where she was inspired by the Tampa-based organization, On Bikes. When she decided to move back, she brought the concept back to New Orleans. "New Orleans has become a major biking city, yet it lacks this type of community resource. When I asked my dad, 'Do you remember your first bike?' The joy in his smile was all the answer I needed, and he has been instrumental in launching BYO Bikes in March 2019."
Throughout the year, BYOBikes holds fundraising events, corporate builds, and special community-wide giveaways to raise funds for their annual bike giveaway in December, Celebration in the Spokes. This event held in City Park brings the community together and engages New Orleans'youth in positive and uplifting experiences. In 2019, BYO Bike's donated 250 brand new bicycles to kids of all ages from all of New Orleans' districts, and this year the plan is to donate 250 bikes from two locations to be determined, in Mid City and in Algiers, Louisiana.
BYO Bike's core purpose is to build a stronger, safer community, and Brown hopes that each bike given will lead its recipient to better things and better places. The mission of BYO Bikes, along with its sponsors and NOPD, is to let the children know they are cared about and are not forgotten. She says the donated bicycles have a lasting impact on the city's youth because they promote healthy lifestyle choices and teach children responsibility. They also provide a mode of transportation for kids that might otherwise have to walk to places like school. BYO Bikes accepts donations year-round through its Facebook page and website. Since BYO Bikes is 100% volunteer-driven, every single penny donated goes straight towards bicycles. Every $150 collected buys a bicycle, helmet, a lock, lights, and a bicycle safety course for one child. BYO Bikes provides these additional resources to each child to ensure they learn how to bike safely and responsibly. If you would like to get involved with BYO Bikes, they are always seeking volunteers and are currently seeking board members.
Mark Lewis' Give A Damn Movement is inspired by organizations like BYO Bikes, who truly Give A Damn about the community they live in and turn their passion into a purpose to give back. To join the movement, you can take the Global Citizen Accountability Pledge and commit to serving others and do so without ego, criticism, condemning, or complaining. Lewis believes that if we can get more people to carry out the principles of the GIVE A DAMN philosophy, we will see an important cultural shift in mindset. His mantra is, "Individually YOU can make a difference, but collectively WE change the world". He agreed to donate $1 to BYOBikes for every individual that takes the Pledge from now until November 30.
An inspiring business mentor, coach, consultant, and speaker, Lewis has spread his practical advice and positive message globally. With guest appearances on multiple radio, television shows, and podcasts, Lewis is off to a great start in starting his cultural revolution.
