Denis Allan Daniel, an experienced intellectual property attorney at one of the leading intellectual property law firms in Brazil, has completed his new book “Bidú Sayão: Passion and Determination”: a gripping and potent portrait of a woefully misunderstood artist, Brazilian opera star Bidú Sayão.
Author Denis Allan Daniel describes his inspiration for starting this biography writes, “I suddenly woke up after a dream, repeating to myself the name Bidú Sayão. This was immediately followed by the thought that I should write a biography of the famous Brazilian opera singer.
“There are several reasons to explain why I chose to write this biography. One is that in 1950, when I was sixteen years old, I first heard the Swedish tenor Jussi Björling singing on the radio and became fascinated with his voice. In 1953, I attended a recital Jussi gave in London and have been a bewildered fan ever since. Years later, I heard him sing together with the soprano Bidú Sayão and this paved the way to my total love and passion for opera. During her career Bidú Sayão was criticized by her fellow Brazilians for having taken certain decisions; they called her unpatriotic and doubter her love for her country, which caused her tremendous grief. These facts also contributed to my need to refute this criticism.
“Perhaps the most important and significant reason in taking on the challenge of writing a biography of Bidú is the fact that never before have her very personal feelings, sorrows, resentments, disappointments, anger and disillusions been revealed. She stated that she was not pleased with any biography about her and therefore decided to write her autobiography, but this never materialized.
“Finally, it was felt necessary to pay tribute to a very special lady who possessed magnificent human qualities and who through enormous effort and self-sacrifice, plus an uncontrollable passion and determination, became the famous international star she always wished to be.”
Published by Page Publishing, Denis Allan Daniel’s engrossing tale covers the life and career of Bidú Sayão, one of the most fascinating and misunderstood opera stars of her time. The book begins with a detailed analysis of Bidú’s birth and upbringing in Rio de Janeiro and the roots of her singing lessons. The book then covers topics related to Bidú’s international travels, perfecting her singing abilities and gaining valuable experience as an opera singer. The rest of the book chronicles the successes and pitfalls of her storied career and personal life, including the controversies she faced in Brazil.
In her lifetime, Bidú was unhappy with any biography written about her, and she set out to write her own autobiography; this never came to be, but the author of this book looks to replicate that wish by including never-before-revealed details about her life to inform a new understanding of this misjudged opera star. This book is a labor of love by the author, and it will undoubtedly serve as the definitive biography of Bidú Sayão for years to come, giving her the due attention she has always deserved.
Readers who wish to experience this revelatory work can purchase “Bidú Sayão: Passion and Determination” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes Store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.
