Ronald Combs, a teacher of voice and opera at the university level for over forty years and a composer with nine operas to his credit, has completed his new book “The Remarkable Adventure of Princess Fu Xiao”: a gripping and potent story about discovering one’s inner truth.
“This book was written for the daughter of a friend of mine. Fu Xiao was adopted from China when she was a baby. Her mom sang at the Lyric Opera in Chicago and was studying singing with me. Fu Xiao sometimes accompanied her mother to the lessors. She loved to read and often brought a book to pass the time,” writes Ronald Combs on describing his inspiration for writing this story. “Her birthday was coming up. So I decided it might be fun to dash off a little story for her as a birthday gift. It turned out that writing a story is far more challenging than I imagined. I struggled with it for several months. When it was finally finished, an artistic friend of mine kindly agreed to illustrate it.”
Published by Page Publishing, Ronald Combs’s captivating tale follows Fu Xiao, a young girl who was adopted from China as a baby. One afternoon, on a trip to the zoo, she is confronted by a stranger who tells her that he is her older brother. He explains that she is actually a princess in a mysterious kingdom called Le Yuan and that she has a twin sister.
Le Yuan is in terrible trouble, and only Fu Xiao can save it from utter devastation. She agrees to try her best to help, resulting in a rousing ride to China on the back of a dragon. When she reaches the kingdom, she faces thrilling confrontations with an evil witch and a scheming courtier. To save the kingdom, Le Yuan must free her sister and overcome the magical powers of the witch. The result is a delightful adventure and accompanying stunning illustrations that will keep readers turning the pages until the very end.
