Her honesty and insights as she navigates these events and grows into a more centered and fulfilled version of her 'new' self is beautiful and very readable.

As fast as lightning strikes the Earth, Karen Maharaj’s life as she knew it changed. “Struck by Reality: A Journey of Awakening” by Karen Maharaj is a shocking memoir about her journey over two years to accomplish an awakening after she lost a parent, her marriage, her loving bird, a Conure named Pepper, and the man who changed the way she views life itself, James. “Struck by Reality” honors James, whose last moments were spent with Maharaj after the two were struck by lightning on the beach. Maharaj’s story serves as a window of insight to her journey of trading in a life mandated by traditions, norms and societal presumptions for one truly lived in stride with no plans or expectations.

Maharaj, a woman who was trapped in a world of introspection, practiced mindfulness and meditation in seclusion. James was able to pull her out of her bubble by showing her she can see the beauty around her to embrace the world. After James’ death, Maharaj turned to writing to cope and remember the man who walked Siesta Key beach with her that fateful day. She published “Struck by Reality” to celebrate James and to pass along the gift given to her by him. The most important being the ability to live awake while holding her chin up and looking at the beauty around her; versus looking within and shutting the world out.

Today, she has turned the page on a new chapter. One in which she is present in every moment and she has deeper understanding that life is short but can be meaningful. Maharaj learned that happiness is found in present moments through allowing life to unfold without resistance, and in turn, is teaching others that things happen for us not to us.

“I am sharing this because I know that the next stage in my growth involves being an example of living life authentically. I am committing to this process because I believe that we all have a unique contribution and gift to share within our lifetime. Self-discovery is the only path on which we can discover our gifts if we are willing to go there,” Maharaj said.

This memoir highlights tragedy and ways to survive unexpected events. Maharaj delivers her personal story with empathy for others enduring the death of a loved one, the loss of a pet or those overwhelmed with the expectations of others. While still on her journey to living a mindful life saturated in happiness, Maharaj kindly invites others to embrace each moment as it comes. “Struck by Reality” is truly a beacon of hope for those who are ready to stop planning their joy and start finding it in their everyday life instead.

Based on one Amazon review by Florence Barber:

“Her honesty and insights as she navigates these events and grows into a more centered and fulfilled version of her 'new' self is beautiful and very readable. It will be inspiring for a reader who is seeking their path towards deeper self-understanding and more awareness as they grow into their own better future.”
