Bastyr University's Department of Midwifery receives a five-year, $3.25 million federal grant from Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to provide scholarships for eligible students in its Master of Science in Midwifery program. The funding reduces financial barriers to midwifery education, supports students through graduation, and helps prepare more community midwives to care for families during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period.
KENMORE, Wash., Oct. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, through HRSA, awarded the Bastyr University Department of Midwifery a five-year, $3.25 million grant to fund scholarships for eligible students in its Master of Science in Midwifery program.
The grant is part of a federal program to support healthcare higher education for students who meet eligibility requirements for HRSA's Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students program.
"By reducing financial barriers to midwifery education, the HRSA grant helps eligible students pursue education and continue through graduation, bringing their skills and commitment to the families they serve," says Bastyr University Midwifery Department Chair Dr. Paula Pelletier-Butler. "The award strengthens Bastyr University's role in preparing community midwives. It represents a meaningful investment in the future of the profession. Its impact will reach beyond the classroom as graduates provide skilled, compassionate care during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period in communities where that care is needed."
Most students in Bastyr University's Master of Science in Midwifery program are eligible for HRSA grant-funded scholarships. Program leaders anticipate larger cohorts now that the grant is awarded. The grant helps Bastyr University continue to educate midwives who support healthy pregnancies, healthy families and healthier communities.
