Tennis Australia has put forward suggested rule adjustments that are intended to speed up the game of tennis. Dubbed “Fast4,” some of the rule variations organizers have implemented in the Fast4 format include sets being a best-of-seven series, with a 3-3 tiebreaker being a five-to-five-point contest, meaning players don’t have to win by two, no lets on service, and no sitting during changeovers. “Any change to the fundamental rules of a sport should be met with precaution, but looking at this new Fast4 model, the attraction is understandable,” says Peter Nielsen, director of Bayview Village Tennis Camp. “Tennis is becoming more and more popular, particularly with younger people here in Canada, so now organizers are searching for ways to make the game more engaging, specifically for audiences on TV; that means cutting down on the potential length of some of these matches.”
Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt played an exhibition match in January as the first test run of the Fast4 rule set, with Federer winning 4-3, 2-4, 3-4, 4-0, 4-2 in 92 minutes. Many major tennis organizations were observing the match to determine the rule set’s viability, but reactions appear to be mixed, even amongst the players; Hewitt approves of the concept, while Federer believes it takes away from what makes tennis special. “We at Bayview Village Tennis Camp have no immediate objections to the rule variations and feel organizers are correct in their intentions of making the game more suitable for TV viewers,” Nielsen concludes. “These Fast4 rules won’t guarantee the length of matches, but they will certainly cut down on the time. This will hopefully help to attract new fans to the sport who may have originally been turned off by the prospect of incredibly long matches.”
