The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN), the benchmark for board certification across the emergency nursing spectrum, today announced it will offer military RNs and advanced practice nurses (APRNs) applying to earn or renew specialty certifications in emergency, trauma and transport care a substantial discount on certification fees.

Eligible nurses across the U.S. military, including active-duty service members, reservists and veterans, will be offered a nearly 50 percent fee reduction on initial certification, recertification and retesting for all five BCEN certification programs – the Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), the Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN), the Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN), the Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN) and the Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN).

“BCEN is committed to doing everything we can to support military nurses as they validate their specialty knowledge through national board certification and earn this highest of professional distinctions,” said BCEN CEO Janie Schumaker, MBA, BSN, RN, CEN, CENP, CPHQ, FABC.

“Military nurses have excelled, innovated and led in emergency, trauma and transport care on and off the battlefield since Florence Nightingale and the birth of modern nursing,” added Schumaker, who is also president of the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS). “BCEN is proud to recognize, honor and thank the extraordinary women and men who are called to both serve the ill and injured through the nursing profession and serve their country through military service.”

Specifically, the across-the-board fee for military RNs and APRNs will be $195 instead of $370 for initial certification, $350 for recertification, and $340 for retesting. Complete details and eligibility requirements are available here and on the “exam fees and discounts” tab for each BCEN certification program.

The growing body of nursing specialty certification research, as well as BCEN’s Value of CEN Certification Research Study, demonstrate that nursing specialty certification contributes to improved patient care and outcomes, improved team and organizational outcomes, and greater nursing career success and satisfaction.

“Specialty certification independently validates clinical and professional excellence to patients, colleagues, current and future employers, and the nurses who earn it,” said Schumaker, “BCEN invites and welcomes active and retired military nurses to pursue joining the esteemed ranks of the BCEN community.”

Other BCEN Discounts
In support of employers committed to building a certified emergency, trauma and transport nursing workforce, BCEN offers volume discounts on certification and recertification fees through the BCEN Voucher Program. For nurses who demonstrate a commitment to their specialty through professional membership, BCEN offers certification and recertification discounts to members of the Air & Surface Transport Nurses Association (ASTNA), the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), and the Society of Trauma Nurses (STN) for the corresponding specialty certifications.
