Lemon
Lemon juice helps to lighten the skin, which can help reduce dark spots on the skin, and assist in eliminating blemishes. If you use lemon juice it is important after its application to avoid exposure to sunlight.

Honey, Lemon and Milk
The ancient Egyptians took great care of their skin's appearance. The combination of Honey mixed with lemon and milk was a beauty regime for them. This trio of ingredients help in getting a lighter and clearer skin. You can also add cucumber juice for a tightening effect.

Oatmeal
Oats can be mixed with turmeric and water and used as a face mask. It helps remove dirt from the pores. Mix the ingredients, apply on the skin, allow to dry, rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry.

Tomato
Tomato can lighten the skin and help remove excess oil. It can have this effect even on blocked pores. Remove the skin and seeds of the tomato, apply pulp to the skin and rinse once it dries.

Potato
Using Potato takes a few applications before results are seen. This is a good remedy for lightening the skin, especially dark spots of hyperpigmentation. It may also enhance the skin's texture and tone. Grate up a small potato, squeeze out the excess water and apply to the area. Leave on for at least 10 minutes, rinse, pat dry and apply a natural moisturiser.

Ice Cubes
Ice cubes can improve circulation and cool inflamed skin. It has also been reported to extend the lasting effects of make-up, if used just before application.

Orange Peel
Orange peel is a good cleanser for oily skin as it can help reduce excess oil. It also produces some antimicrobial and purifying actions. It can be used as a scrub to assist in eliminating dead skin cells leaving it rejuvenated and glowing.

Herbs and Spices for Skin Health

Some herbs can also help to improve the condition of your skin, among them are these examples:

Chandan (powdered Sandalwood)
This is a popular skin protector used in Northern India and Nepal. It is reported to have has soothing, cooling and calming properties. It can be used to treat skin infections, rashes, irritations, and both hyper and hypo pigmentation.

Turmeric
Turmeric could be considered the wonder spice because it has so many medicinal uses, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and skin boosting effects. Turmeric is an all round cure for many health issues and in some Arabian and Indian cultures it is mixed with water and applied to any cut or bruise to speed the healing process and protect the injury from bacteria.

Multani Mitti (Fuller's Earth)
One of the earliest substances used for a facial mask. Multani Mitti can cell regenerate skin cells, reduce acne scarring, and blemishes. It helps to exfoliate the dead skin cells of the skin and opens blocked pores which allows the skin to breathe.

Causes of skin problems
The environment can have a negative effect on the skin; strong wind and sun can damage the outer surface or epidermis, although excessive sun exposure can damage the deeper layers of the skin and in extreme cases this can be permanent.
