29 year-old Homegrown Athlete is the Youngest Athletic Director in the PVAC.

Becky Silberman, Interim Athletic Director for the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School (CESJDS), has been named Director of Athletics and Summer Programs, effective immediately. Becky is the youngest athletic director and one of just five female athletic directors in the School’s conference, the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference (PVAC). She has served CESJDS in a variety of capacities for over seven years including a coach, ESOL and Hebrew teacher, grade advisor, and middle school physical education teacher.

Becky earned both a B.S. in Kinesiology and a M.A. in Education, with an emphasis in Physical Education, from the University of Maryland, College Park. Outside of CESJDS, Becky has been a Head Basketball Coach at the Bender JCC of Greater Washington and an Assistant Basketball Coach for the Potomac Valley Thunder, AAU (Amateur Athletic Union). She also coached the USA Junior Girls Basketball Team in the 2017 Maccabiah Games, leading the group of girls through international competition. Becky is homegrown Marylander, and was a year-round athlete at neighboring Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy.

“As Interim Athletic Director, Becky demonstrated excellent vision for the growth of our athletic programs, deep understanding of, and commitment to, our Jewish values, and the ability to work well with students, parents, faculty, administration, and the other schools who are part of the PVAC. We are thrilled to have her on board for the long-term,” said Dr. Marc Lindner, High School Principal and Associate Head of School.

“For me, sports are a way to connect everything else in your life. I find the values you learn in athletics can be applied in life across the board, specifically sportsmanship. Sports are a vehicle for learning how to overcome adversity and become a self-advocate. I look forward to guiding the coaches, the students, and the teams to success.” said Becky.

CESJDS is the largest JK-12 independent Jewish day school in North America. Our mission is to engage students in an outstanding and inspiring general and Judaic education. CESJDS achieves academic excellence through an integrated curriculum, anchored in Jewish values.
