Bed Bugs Are on the Rise in Many Travel Destinations
Asheboro, NC (PRWEB) July 30, 2013 -- Otho's Pest Management provides the following tips for travelers to avoid the prevalence of bed bugs during this summer travel season.
Bed bugs are least likely to be found in the bathroom of a hotel. Before settling in to the temporary residence, stow all luggage in the bathroom prior to room inspection for bed bugs.
Always inspect the bed or beds. Pull back the linens, and check around the welting of the mattress. The welting consists of the rope like cord that goes all the way around the mattress. If there are black or reddish brown spots, notify hotel staff immediately. Be sure to check the headboard as well, bed bugs stay within five to 12 feet of its host.
Keep searching other areas of the room including: behind picture frames, alarm clock, under the room phone, cushions of couches or soft chairs, and in the closet. Make sure all suitcases are kept off of the floor. For the duration of the trip, keep bags on the desktop, dresser or on the luggage rack in the room.
Keep in mind that bed bugs can travel from suitcase to suitcase while luggage is stored in the cargo belly of an aircraft. Cargo bays are rarely cleaned, unlike a hotel room. Ask the hotel if they have put any practices in place for bed bug prevention. Additionally, there is any suspicious evidence of bugs, immediately ask the hotel staff to be moved at least two floors away. The reason being, bed bugs can travel through electrical outlets. When it comes to a bed bug scare, the hotel staff should be more than receptive to oblige your request.
"One hotel room we serviced for three months, had a widespread infestation because the bed bugs traveled through the electrical cracks and plumbing," said Greg Ross, co-owner of Otho's.
Bug bites breakout on the body after three days from initial contact, not instantly.
For the best pest control over bed bugs, hire a professional pest control company like Otho's Pest Management to have them conduct a professional inspection. Most over the counter pest control sprays do not work and are often not the safest pest control.
