Benzer Pharmacy is working to update the traditional model of a community pharmacy. By tackling pharmaceutical care from multiple angles, weaknesses of the traditional pharmaceutical model are addressed and turned into strengths. Benzer brings patients to the pharmacy, while also bringing the pharmacy to the patients.
The pharmacy’s role does not have to be limited to illness management; it can also play a role in prevention. In partnership with HabitNu, Benzer Pharmacy is working to bring diabetes prevention to a broader audience. The increasing number of patients diagnosed with prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes provides an expanding base of potential customers. HabitNu uses an innovative mobile application to help patients track their progress and goals. Building care goals, such as weight loss and exercise, into a simple and convenient mobile app increases the likelihood that patients will keep up with treatment programs.
HabitNu provides the application, while Benzer is responsible for the coaching and sessions required to successfully use the app. As a fully CDC-recognized provider of diabetes prevention programs contracted, HabitNu also coordinates with Benzer to bring new prediabetic patients into the program. HabitNu’s partnership with Diabetes Prevention Program integrator Solera Health allows for a large number of patients in need of support to be referred to Benzer Pharmacy. Benzer provides the weekly lifestyle coaching sessions where patients learn skills utilized through the application interface.
Sessions focus on healthy weight loss, sustainable dietary changes, and exercise programming. Benzer’s pharmacists and pharmacy technicians receive training to become lifestyle coaches prior to conducting coaching sessions. With classes beginning in August of 2018, Benzer hopes to revolutionize diabetes prevention through an interface that patients not only know how to but like to use.
Benzer Pharmacy also works to help patients manage their current medication regimens. The Medication Therapy Management (MTM) program focuses on educating patients to maximize treatment benefits. Pharmacists play a key role in MTM, conducting patient reviews as well as working with other health care providers to address medical issues. Benzer’s pharmacists serve as the catalyst for medication changes, treatment interventions, and many other services on behalf of patients.
Pharmacists are thus responsible for preventing unnecessary hospitalizations, doctor’s visits, and emergency care. MTM serves as the foundation for successful clinical care by providing patients with the information and motivation required to successfully manage their health.
The final step in updating the model of a traditional community pharmacy involves setting up an off-site clinic. The flagship clinical site, located at Brandon, provides patients with a breadth of clinical services including HabitNu programming and immunizations. Benzer’s new off-site clinic program will provide communities with affordable and accessible health care, including preventative care and chronic disease management. By seamlessly integrating innovative education, management, and service programs, Benzer is bringing communities the pharmacies that are in demand and desperately needed.
