BERKELEY, Calif., Nov. 17, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Local dignitaries gathered for the grand opening of Elegance Berkeley, a new assisted living and memory support community located at 2100 San Pablo Avenue near University Avenue in the Poet's Corner neighborhood. The event, which took place Thursday, November 10, was attended by residents, staff members, community guests, the development team and city government officials including Berkeley Councilmember Terry Taplin and Chief Strategist of the Economic Innovation, Kieron Slaughter.
"We're excited to serve older people looking for holistic care and a vibrant, supportive environment that makes Berkeley living easier and more accessible," said Elegance Berkeley's Executive Director Andrew Badoud.
The four-story new construction offers 94 apartments available in studio and one- bedroom floor plans. Residents may select from 64 assisted living and 30 memory support apartments, with a starting rate of $6,850 per month. Apartment features include nine-foot ceiling heights, views of the Bay and Berkeley Hills, and kitchenettes with quartz countertops.
The community offers a wide range of amenities including a full-service restaurant, bistro with wine bar, group fitness center, classroom, intergenerational art lab, library and listening lounge, theater, salon, courtyard with mobility-enhancing fitness equipment, outdoor grill and theater, a wellness and telehealth suite, and a physical and occupational therapy center.
Elegance Berkeley is a collaboration between private equity company Capital Health Group, LLC, San Francisco Bay Area developer Spirit Living, and Elegance Living management company, to bring high-quality senior living options to the Bay Area.
"The Northern California market is underserved in seniors housing and especially the East Bay. We are thrilled to offer a unique urban senior housing option that includes assisted living, memory care, and mixed-use ground level retail to East Bay families," said Ken Assiran, Capital Health Group's Managing Principal.
"Our goal from the very beginning was to make a vibrant community and hub of activity. We are partnering with several local arts and learning organizations to support every aspect of residents' well-being," according to Josh Krull, CEO Elegance Senior Living. "These include Brushstrokes for pottery and ceramics, Kala Art Institute for a variety of classes, Maker's Paradise for productions and performances, and local elementary schools for intergenerational art programs."
"As a UC Berkeley alumnus, I'm proud to offer seniors a beautiful place where they can live and stay engaged. This is the first dedicated senior care community built in Berkeley in the last 50 years. This will give the faculty and professors who had such an important impact on my life an opportunity to continue living in Berkeley when they need support instead of having to move away from their community," said Ali Shabahangi, principal at Spirit Living, the developer of Elegance Berkeley.
"Berkeley's passion for the arts, theater and culture is renowned," said Amir Kia, principal at Spirit Living. "So we designed this community specifically to cater to that passion. When East Bay elders choose to live here it will be easier than ever to continue participating, contributing and enjoying regular opportunities to interact with people from all generations."
In the community's secure, intentionally designed memory support neighborhood, residents benefit from strong staff-resident relationships and an individualized approach to service and care with a focus on sensory therapy and engagement. It features a music room, demonstration kitchen, active engagement stations, and a sensory relaxation room.
Residents will also enjoy a seasonally changing menu of locally sourced selections, with organic options and accommodations for certain dietary requirements and requests, all created under the guidance of the on-staff nutrition consultant and holistic chef.
