Altadena, CA (PRWEB) January 14, 2014 -- Independent publisher Bitingduck Press, with offices in Altadena (Los Angeles County), California, and Montreal, Canada, has big ideas for 2014 in production and sales of interactive fiction and non-fiction. The press's goals are to produce high-quality, low-cost, DRM-free ebooks and to use the sales of e-books to support local businesses.
The first major development will be bookstore sales in local independent bookstores using a new technology called WebBytez. WebBytez is a patent-pending way to sell e-books in any venue with no inventory or possibility of shoplifting. The way it works is simple: a custom QR code is printed onto a postcard with each book's cover art and brief description. The QR code is custom to the book and the merchant. The postcards are displayed in a store and offered free to customers. When the customer decides to buy the book, he or she simply scans the QR code with a cell phone and buys the book from the publisher. Watch for WebBytez posters in bookstores throughout LA's east side this year!
Developments in e-book technology will also allow Bitingduck Press to release interactive, multimedia books in multiple genres. The press's first interactive mathematics book, "Truly Tricky Graduate Problems in Physics," is available through the webstore in MathML format. This format may be read in most browsers and in MathJax enabled e-readers. The DRM-free format allows readers to modify the e-book for interactive display or use in other readers. The book is also available in print through Amazon.
In Spring 2014, Bitingduck will release Hunter Gardner's debut novel, "School." School is a zany, fast-paced teen adventure where boredom and desire for pocket money lead a motley crew into increasingly criminal dealings, from plagiarizing essays to selling drugs. Set in Wilson, South Carolina, the story has a distinctly Southern college town flavor and an abundance of local color. The book will be issued as a traditional e-book and paperback as well as an enhanced e-book with multimedia features. These features will include full-color illustrations and music, with the soundtrack featuring artists primarily from Raleigh—the closest metropolis to Wilson— as well as five original tracks that Gardner produces in the summer of 2013.
Bitingduck Press is an independent press founded by two scientists in 2012. It acquired Boson Books that same year, and now represents over 150 titles and 70 authors. The press specializes in fiction and narrative non-fiction by and about scientists, with two major themes for 2014-15: Young Adult and Hard Sci-Fi. Book reviewers and members of the press may obtain advance review copies all upcoming titles on NetGalley or by contacting Bitingduck Press directly. Submissions guidelines are found on the press's website.
