BitNami User Survey Points to Growing Momentum of Cloud Application Usage

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) November 08, 2013 -- BitNami, the most popular destination for the most popular server applications, today released statistics from a broad user survey that highlighted the increasing momentum of server applications being deployed in the cloud. 41% of the more than 3,700 respondents stated that their organizations deployed more applications in the cloud during the past twelve months than in the previous year. Moving forward, nearly 56% of respondents stated that their organizations planned to deploy more cloud applications during the next twelve months. The survey results demonstrate the significant and accelerated movement to public and private cloud environments as acceptable environments for organizations of all sizes.

Additional survey results include:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) remains the most popular destination for cloud deployments, with nearly 39% of respondents expecting to deploy applications on AWS during the next twelve months.
  • Among the organizations that deploy applications in AWS, 60% increased the number of applications deployed there during the past twelve months and 76% expect to further increase the usage of cloud applications over the next twelve months.
  • After AWS, the next most common cloud deployments were private clouds (27%) followed by Google Compute Engine (16%), Microsoft Azure (11%), VMware Cloud (11%) and Rackspace (8%).
  • Private cloud adoption was highest among larger organizations (greater than 1,000 employees) with 39% of respondents expecting to deploy applications in private clouds over the next twelve months compared with just 25% for small companies (50 employees or fewer).
  • Small businesses (less than 50 employees) have generally adopted cloud applications at a slightly higher rate than large organizations (more than 1,000 employees) during the past twelve months: 48 to 38%.
  • Business users have embraced cloud applications at a slightly higher rate than their technical counterparts with over 47% increasing cloud application usage over the past twelve months and 62% planning to increase adoption over the next twelve months, compared to 42% and 57% respectively.
  • The most common reasons given for moving more applications to the cloud include cost savings, scalability, accessibility (including mobility), reliability and time savings.
  • The most common reasons for not moving applications to the cloud were concerns about security, privacy/data sensitivity, availability, cost and loss of IT control.

The BitNami users surveyed had previously registered on BitNami.com for access to any of 80+ free applications and developer stacks that BitNami produces for various deployment environments, including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux for desktop and server environments, VMware virtualized environments and various public cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.
