Small Business Innovation Research Phase I Option Awarded to BlackBox Biometrics® (B3)
Rochester, NY (PRWEB) May 07, 2014 -- A Phase I Option for further development of the state of the art Blast Gauge™ System is awarded to BlackBox Biometrics, Inc. (B3) by the Marine Corps’ Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program. Blast-related Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) continues to damage our service members, and this program will further advance the technology of the Blast Gauge System as it gives insight into this complex injury.
The SBIR program is a highly competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research/Research and Development (R/R&D) that has the potential for commercialization. Through a competitive awards-based program, SBIR enables small businesses to explore their technological potential and provides the incentive to profit from its commercialization. The objective of Phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of the proposed R/R&D efforts and to determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization prior to providing further Federal support.
The Blast Gauge System records service member’s exposure to blast overpressure, guiding triage and treatment as a result of these concussive forces. It’s already in use in every branch of the US Armed Forces, as well as internationally. But the Marine Corps Systems Command saw the possibility to further this already advanced technology.
“We look forward to employing a blast sensor that will improve TBI triage and treatment capabilities for our combatants,” states John O’Donnell, Marine Corps Systems Command, “all while simplifying the logistics associated with its use.”
Under this SBIR contract (N123-152), the Blast Gauge System will continue to be a small, lightweight, low power device with the capability to detect, measure and record concussive forces to personnel. The ability to transfer blast event data to a computer will be enhanced allowing for either a USB or wireless RF connection. Improved algorithms and increased memory space will allow for the storage of far more events with greater accuracy and fewer false triggers. All of these updates are planned for completion by the end of 2015.
About BlackBox Biometrics, Inc. (B3):
BlackBox Biometrics (B3) specializes in developing innovative technology that measures the unseen impact of concussive injuries, aiding in triage and treatment. The Blast Gauge System is a revolutionary advancement in explosive blast detection, enabling recognition of exposure and potential for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in the Military and Law Enforcement. The system captures complex data associated with concussive events, providing medical personnel with digital information to better understand the event, ultimately leading to faster and more accurate treatment.
