NEW YORK, Feb. 9, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- February is Black History Month, a national celebration that invites all to recognize and celebrate the considerable achievements and history of Black Americans. With this recognition comes the need to appreciate Black American inventors—and celebrate the creators of today's most popular games. From the card game Phase 10 to the iconic Super Soaker, African-American inventors are behind some of today's most popular games—as well as the ones you might have grown up with.
Enter Blitz Champz—the fun and educational football-themed card game that blends critical math skills with the strategic game of football—a perfect way to celebrate Black History Month while having fun and learning. Created by Adrienne Smith, Boston Renegades Wide Receiver, football advocate and spokesperson, Orange is the New Black actress, and entrepreneur, Blitz Champz is available for purchase on Amazon and its print-and-play version is available at http://www.blitzchampz.com.
"Black History Month is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of Black Americans, and the creators and inventors of products that changed the world," stated Ms. Smith. "As inventor of Blitz Champz, I'm honored to share the game—which is designed for kids, families and educators—as the perfect family activity for those looking for unplugged family time. It is also a solution for teachers and other learning professionals who are trying to engage with kids outside the classroom and in today's COVID era. Blitz Champz is an easy-to-learn, fast-paced card game that can be somewhat addictive—but it is exactly this attribute that has kids playing, coming back, strategizing, and learning."
Created for kids age 7 and up as well as their families, Blitz Champz features 100 vibrantly-illustrated playing cards characterizing a diverse lineup of male and female players. The game takes two minutes to learn and can be played by two to six people in 30 minutes or less. The rules of Blitz Champz are simple: use offensive cards to score points, defensive cards to remove points, and continuation cards to keep the game in motion. Whoever scores 21 or more points first, wins.
The world of games has been influenced tremendously by Black American game creators. Among them, Jerry Lawson—who pioneered home video gaming and interchangeable games in the 1970s—was one of the only African-American engineers of the era. Ken Johnson is the creator of Phase 10, which has sold over 3 million copies. Lonnie Johnson, Aerospace Engineer for NASA, created the water toy Super Soaker. Adrienne Smith's Blitz Champz adds to this list as an indispensable tool for countless families and school districts across the New York City area, not only as a fun, football-themed activity—but also as simply an exciting card game to add to your family's game night.
Blitz Champz is a 2017 National Parenting Product Awards (NAPPA) winner, and a selected product at Walmart's 2018 Annual Open Call Event, capturing the spirit of football with real field play, including offensive and defensive moves, passes, runs, completions, fumbles—and even the unpredictable blitz and Hail Mary.
Black History Month was founded by Carter G. Woodson, an American historian, author, journalist, and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. He chose the second week of February—which eventually became the month of February—to recognize the holiday, for it marks two important birthdays: Frederick Douglass, a former slave who became a prominent abolitionist and civil rights leader; and Abraham Lincoln, U.S. president who signed the Emancipation Proclamation abolishing slavery.
Ms. Smith is the founder of Gridiron Queendom, an organization that encourages female participation in football and unifies and promotes the efforts of women and girls around the globe who play football. Since 2011, Ms. Smith has played for the Boston Renegades, a tackle football team in the Women's Football Alliance and winner of national championships in 2010, 2011, 2014, 2018, and 2019. Her professional career began in Japan, where she worked as a translator and Coordinator of International Relations for the Japanese Board of Education. During her two years in this position, Adrienne produced and co-hosted a local television show geared towards educating Japanese people about American culture. Ms. Smith earned her MBA from Columbia Business School in Media & Entertainment; and her Bachelor's degree in Japanese and Film, with a pre-med concentration from Washington University in St. Louis.
