Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing Announces 2019 Board of Directors

OAK BROOK, Ill., Dec. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN), the benchmark for emergency nursing specialty certification, today announced its 2019 board of directors and recognized outgoing members.

"Their dedication and generous service advances board certification for nurses to the benefit of emergency patients and the nursing profession."

The following new and reelected members will begin their terms on January 1, 2019:

Steven P. Talbot, MSN, RN, CEN, TCRN, trauma program manager and operations administrator manager, Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center in Houston, Texas, was elected to his first board term as a member at large. "Steven has been an EMT, a flight nurse, an adult and pediatric emergency nurse, an administrator, and is currently developing Memorial Hermann's new trauma center from the ground up," said Ledford. "In short, he is a wealth of knowledge and experience."

Rebecca Steinmann, MS, APN, CPEN, CEN, TCRN, CCRN, CCNS, FAEN, of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, was reaffirmed to serve a second one-year term as secretary/treasurer.

Sean M. Elwell, MSN, RN, NE-BC, TCRN, EMT, of Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, Wilmington, Delaware, was reelected to a second two-year term as the Society of Trauma Nurses representative.

The following outgoing board members were recognized:

Member at Large Kathleen Albert, MSN, RN, CNS, CEN, CPEN, TCRN, of Lowell General Hospital, Lowell, Massachusetts, began her BCEN service 10 years ago as an exam item writer. "Kathy's skill base in patient care and evidence-based care and her understanding of the development and knowledge of emergency nurses as they grow through their career brought invaluable perspectives to our board," said Ledford.

Karen Wiley, MSN, RN, CEN, of CHI Health Immanuel, Omaha, Nebraska, who served a one-year term as the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) representative, enhanced communications between BCEN and ENA. The new ENA representative will be elected by early 2019.

BCEN board members serve on a volunteer basis for two-year terms, and with the exception of the industry association and public representatives, must have served as a BCEN certification exam item writer and as a member of a BCEN Exam Construction Review Committee (ECRC). Individuals serving as the Air & Surface Transport Nurses Association (ASTNA), Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), and Society of Trauma Nurses (STN) representatives must be actively involved in the professional association they represent.
