Candid presentation leads readers down the uniquely painful path of sexual abuse and its wider impacts
KENDALLVILLE, Ind., March 20, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Author Heidi Ramer's mother, Karen, was raped for the first time in 1979. She was sexually assaulted at least 12 more times by the same man over the next three years and emotionally tormented by him for the next 20. After harboring her secret for years, she eventually sought help through counseling and her faith. After Karen's untimely death in 2001, Heidi's father handed her a canvas bag full of 15 years of handwritten journals.
In "Her Words, My Voice," Ramer merges the journal entries of her mother with her own journey of introspection to share an authentic story of survival, hope, faith, and unwavering love.
"My goal is to broaden the understanding of how our lives are entangled, how pain is transferred, and how isolation is deadly," said Ramer, "but how truth can be unburied, and healing found."
As Karen's story came to life on new paper, Heidi was met with the fear and understanding that her story as the "secondary survivor" was equally important and also deserved a voice. The story of abuse is not one that's easily told. It doesn't come up in casual conversation and is not one that's told without vulnerability and implicit trust. But not telling it, holding that story deep inside, carried a multitude of silent complications. The stories are powerfully woven together to reflect the tragic yet beautiful integration of their lives and the transformation of two women, formerly defined by pain, into a compassionate legacy.
"This book has been a beautiful, faith driven voyage of healing and reflection," said Ramer. "It's the culmination of many pieces of experience."
