“The Origin of Disease: The War Within” (published by AuthorHouse) combines medical knowledge across medical specialties, and across a spectrum of chronic diseases, to offer a unifying theory for understanding and conquering chronic disease. The book, written by a lawyer and a doctor, reveals patterns in chronic disease not found in medical literature, and offers insights about the root causes of chronic diseases that have the potential to transform medical care and lead to important new discoveries.

Carolyn Merchant, JD & Christopher Merchant, MD believe many chronic diseases are only descriptions of symptoms and findings. The root causes are not identified, and patients are given symptomatic treatment. The authors believe many chronic diseases have a root cause which can be diagnosed and treated, to benefit the patient and society. They offer a revolutionary new vision for understanding chronic diseases, ranging from autism to Alzheimer’s, from heart disease to neurologic disease, from cancer to diabetes, from mental health and mass shootings to the Zika epidemic. They offer a means to diagnose and treat the root causes of chronic disease, and ways to improve the medical system and medical research, to achieve breakthroughs in chronic disease.

“Our goal is to move medicine forward to find causes and cures for chronic disease, to encourage the medical system to abandon bias, to abandon the diagnosis of symptoms and syndromes, and to benefit patients and society as a whole,” the authors state.

“The Origin of Disease: The War Within” challenges the reader to think of chronic disease in new ways, and offers hope to doctors, researchers and patients alike. It is a book for everyone interested in improving health and extending longevity. “Understanding the problem is the beginning of finding a solution”, the authors advocate. “Simplicity supports truth.”
