For the first inaugural year of the O.W.L. Awards in 2017, BookPal encouraged submissions published in both 2016 and 2017. The submitted titles were available for consideration in three categories: Business, Education, and Health. The 2017 winners included Business category winner The Power of Moments: Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact by Chip Heath and Dan Heath, published by Simon & Schuster, Education category winner The Fire This Time: A New Generation Speaks About Race edited by Jesmyn Ward, published by Simon & Schuster, and Health category winner When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi, published by Penguin Random House.
In 2018, BookPal expanded the categories to five: Business, Children's Literature, Wellness, Religion, and Politics & Current Events. BookPal accepted submissions August 1 through September 14, 2018. All publishers with award winners were notified on December 12, 2018.
