The logo on the coin was created for the “Wine of Moldova” brand for the purpose of promoting Moldovan wine industry brand on a global level. The project was started in 2014 by the Moldovan Winemakers Association with the support of the US Government and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Moldova. The goal of the design tender in which Brandon Archibald participated was to refresh brand associations for Moldovan winemakers, and all participants in the tender were required to give a new vision for the brand’s name, slogan, and logo.
Brandon Archibald Global won the tender for designing and presenting the concept in cooperation with the local Moldovan agency Brandson headed by Liliana Urschi. The team from Brandon Archibald that took part in the creation was composed of creative director Boris Alexandrov and designers Elena Parkhisenko and Anton Storozhev.
The symbol they created represents a stylized image of a white stork with a bunch of grapes. The stork is a traditional symbol and a sign of the quality of Moldovan wine growing and winemaking. Aside from the obvious symbol of a stork, there are a number of additional meanings hidden in the design.
For instance, the overall silhouette is in the shape of a drop of wine, the wings create an image of flames, and the bunch of grapes follows the contours of Moldova on the world map. Thus, the logo is a combination of four elements. The grapes symbolize the earth, the stork symbolizes the air, the wings become the sun, or fire, and the drop of wine symbolizes water. The new Moldovan coin expresses the dynamics of natural elements that take part in Moldovan winemaking.
