Brian Grant Foundation Launches Online Exercise Class Finder For People With Parkinson's Disease
Brian Grant Foundation invites fitness professionals with Parkinson's exercise classes to submit their information online to help those living with the disease find classes in their areas
PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 29, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- To help people living with Parkinson's disease (PD) achieve their fitness goals, the Brian Grant Foundation (BGF) has launched its Parkinson's Exercise Class Finder, an easy-to-use online tool that allows people with PD to search for exercise classes in their areas.
The Exercise Class Finder allows users to plug in their location, and search for Parkinson's-specific classes within a 10- to 250-mile radius. They can filter their search by class format, such as private instruction, group classes or online-only classes. They can also filter their search by exercise type. Options include aerobics, boxing, cycling, dance, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), yoga, weightlifting and more!
"Research has found that exercising on a consistent basis is one of the best tools that people with Parkinson's can use to manage symptoms of their disease. But it's not always easy to find fitness classes that cater to people with PD," said Katrina Kahl, executive director of the Brian Grant Foundation. "Not only will the Exercise Class Finder motivate people to find fitness classes, it allows them to connect with others living with Parkinson's in their community."

National Basketball Association player Brian Grant retired in 2006 and was diagnosed with young onset Parkinson's in 2008 at the age of 36. He started the Brian Grant Foundation in 2010 to support Parkinson's research and has since redirected the organization's efforts to provide tools to improve the well-being of people with the disease.
Parkinson's is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects cells in the brain that produce dopamine, a chemical messenger that helps to control movement. The outward signs of Parkinson's may include tremors, slowness of movement, balance problems and rigidity. Though there is no cure for Parkinson's, research has shown that physical activity, healthy eating and social connections are important aspects for managing the condition and improving quality of life with the disease.
