CHICAGO, Jan. 22, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Britannica Digital Learning, a division of the Encyclopaedia Britannica Group, today announced the first annual StandOut Awards for K-12 educators and high school students who have performed outstanding works that exhibit strong character and have significantly improved their schools or communities.
The awards are a reflection of Britannica's mission to inspire curiosity and the joy of learning and its desire to recognize those in the education world who contribute to those goals.
"In a highly disruptive and fast-paced world where everything from the learning environment to mindsets to curriculum has to be transformed to unlock and unleash student potential, we need inspiring educators and students to raise the bar and help break the shackles holding us back," said Karthik Krishnan, global chief executive officer of the Encyclopaedia Britannica Group.
Britannica, which marked its 250th anniversary and 25th year on the internet last month, will accept nominations between now and March 15, and teachers, school librarians, and principals in the United States are encouraged to apply or nominate colleagues and high school students thirteen years or older.
Almost $24,000 in cash prizes will awarded as follows:
Two finalists will be selected, one educator and one student.
- The educator finalist will be awarded a cash prize of $10,000.
- The student finalist will be awarded a cash prize of $5,000.
Ten semi-finalists will be selected, five educators and five students.
- Five educator semi-finalists will each be awarded a cash prize of $1,000.
- Five student semi-finalists will each be awarded a cash prize of $750.
See the official rules for details.
Nominees will be asked to write short essays explaining their work and practices, are encouraged to share videos about their programs, and they will be judged on the basis of their impact and contributions to community building, problem solving and fostering strong relationships.
Judging will be done by Britannica Digital Learning staff and three outside judges:
- Tamiko Brown, Librarian at Ed White E-STEM Magnet School
- Eric Delli Bovi, Executive Director at Chicago, Ill.-based Urban Gateways
- Ravi Hutheesing, Cultural Catalyst & Global Keynote Speaker, Ravi Unites, Inc.
Winners will be announced in May, and in addition to cash prizes they will be featured on the BritannicaLearn.com website and in company publicity.
"We believe that every action by a student or teacher to inspire others around them or break the shackles goes a long way in shaping a vibrant future," said Krishnan. "We encourage educators and high school students across the country to share their own stories or nominate those who have made a difference."
