Buena Vista University Student to Study Mathematics in Budapest
Storm Lake, Iowa (PRWEB) December 05, 2014 -- Buena Vista University (BVU) student Kelsey Mitchell, a senior mathematics major from Decorah, will be participating in the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics (BSM) academic program during the spring 2015 semester. This is the first time a BVU student has participated in the program.
The BSM program is located in Budapest, Hungary, and is a study-abroad program for American and Canadian undergraduate students who are studying mathematics. Along with mathematics, students also have the opportunity to experience the general culture of Hungary.
The BSM instructors are members of Eötvös University, the Mathematical Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the three institutions known for having educated more than half of Hungary's highly acclaimed mathematicians. The courses are taught in English, and most instructors have some experience teaching in North America.

Donath, associate professor of mathematics and computer science and dean of BVU’s School of Science. “Kelsey’s selection for this program demonstrates how hard work, innate ability and a high-quality academic program can combine to produce a powerful, world-class educational opportunity.”
Students from more than 170 colleges and universities have participated in the program since it began in 1985, with some schools sending students more than once. BSM only accepts 55 to 65 students each semester.
Classes are held on the College International campus of the Technical University Budapest. The semester program runs for 14 weeks, and during that time, Mitchell will live in a furnished apartment near the university that she will rent and share with other BSM students.
“I am excited to learn all I can from the instructors at Budapest Semesters in Mathematics. I am also excited to experience another culture, meet new people, and hopefully do some traveling,” said Mitchell. “The opportunity to study math, in English, in another country and all of the support and encouragement BVU has given me for travel made applying for this program a very easy decision. I have been working toward this for almost four years, and I am unbelievably excited it is becoming a reality.”
Mitchell plans to graduate from BVU in May and attend graduate school to continue her study of mathematics.
