California Casualty, Sponsor of the Washington Green Ribbon Schools program, awards $5,000 in grants to Washington school and school district in support of their continuous sustainability and conservation efforts. La Center High School and Bellingham Public Schools will each receive $2,500 from the auto and home insurance provider.
SAN MATEO, Calif., May 24, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- California Casualty, Sponsor of the Washington Green Ribbon Schools program, provides $5,000 to Washington state's U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools (ED GRS) honorees each year. The 2022 Washington Green Ribbon Schools receiving California Casualty grants are La Center High School in La Center, WA and Bellingham Public Schools in Bellingham, WA.
They are among 27 schools, five districts, and four postsecondary institutions from 19 states across the nation being honored for their innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, improve health and wellness, and ensure effective sustainability education.
La Center High School's (LCHS) environmental studies class (ESC), which is a multidisciplinary integrated CTE-natural resources class, and the Environmental Action Team (EAT) have been leading efforts on environmental sustainability and stewardship since 2008. Today, student-led projects, facilitated by staff and outside partners, continue to be a cornerstone of their green programs. Bellingham Public Schools (BPS) is part of Puget Sound Energy's Commercial Strategic Energy Management program, tracks utility use in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, and has transitioned nearly all facilities to direct digital controls. BPS schools are now built to solar-ready standards, all sites offer food scrap composting, and many utilize water-saving systems. California Casualty Assistant Vice President Brian Goodman and Sr. Field Marketing Manager Erica Reich will celebrate with La Center High School while Account Relations Manager, Michelle Hawkins, will celebrate the honor with Bellingham Public Schools. The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) Environment and Sustainability Education Program Supervisor, Elizabeth Schmitz, will attend both presentations.
