KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 2, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- On Friday, January 4, 2019 at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET Caravan Health will hold a free informative webinar explaining the details of the recently finalized regulation outlining the future of Accountable Care Organizations in the Medicare Shared Savings Program. Caravan Health policy experts will walk through the important changes to the program that health providers need to know as we enter the new year. Key among the details is a fast-approaching application due date.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has indicated that ACOs should prepare for a February 22 application deadline, and it might be earlier. According to the Shared Savings Program final rule and the CMS website, CMS will offer an application cycle for a one-time new agreement period start date of July 1, 2019 with a notice of intent to apply available between January 2 and January 18, 2019, and an application submission deadline no later than February 22, 2019. Both existing and new ACOs are eligible to apply. This leaves just over seven weeks, at most, for ACOs to create, vet and sign new agreements under the new rules.
"CMS was extremely responsive to many of the public comments during the rulemaking process. However, the timeline for applications looks to be tight for health providers," said Caravan Health President and former CMS Deputy Chief of Staff Tim Gronniger. "Ninety percent of ACOs renewed in the last six months, showing continued strong interest in participation. Caravan Health can help organizations prepare agreements and applications, in addition to providing comprehensive ACO operational support, network development, and risk sharing to reduce their risk by 75 percent."
In addition to the application date, CMS finalized many of the changes that the agency proposed in August 2018, but there were some important new policies in the final rule. The webinar will go over the length of the new agreement period, the glide path to two-sided risk, the shared savings rate and participation opportunities for hospitals and physician practices.
