Center for Research on Hispanic Children and Families to be Established
Bethesda, MD (PRWEB) November 18, 2013 -- Abt Associates is part of a team that will create a new, national research center devoted to the study of Hispanic Children and Families under a cooperative agreement with the Administration on Children and Families (ACF). This new center will conduct and disseminate research that helps inform ACF programs and policies supporting Hispanic families and children.
Abt Associates and Child Trends, along with collaborative partners from the University of Maryland, College Park, New York University, and the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, were awarded a five-year, $5 million cooperative agreement to develop a Center for Research on Hispanic Children and Families. This new center will serve as a hub for conducting and disseminating research across three priority areas—poverty reduction and self-sufficiency, healthy marriage and responsible fatherhood, and early child care and education.
Hispanics are the largest and one of the most diverse minority groups in the United States, with among the highest levels of child and family poverty. However, despite some of the challenges faced, the Hispanic population also exhibits numerous strengths, such as high rates of children being raised in two-parent, married households, strong family and community support networks and better outcomes than other racial and ethnic groups in some areas, such as maternal and child health.
“We look forward to being part of this groundbreaking effort to establish the Center for Research on Hispanic Children and Families and to provide actionable insights for one of the fastest growing populations of culturally and linguistically diverse children and families across the country,” said Mary Joel Holin, Abt’s division vice president for Social and Economic Policy.
The Hispanic Research Center will be led by Dr. Michael López from Abt and Lina Guzman from Child Trends. The project will include a wide range of partners from universities, research organizations, federal agencies, foundations and the media.
