Jay Smith is best known for penning the Platinum selling single “I Love You This big” for the American Idol television series and its winner Scotty McCreery. ABOUT JAY SMITH
Jay Smith, a native of Galveston, Texas and is the ninth of eleven children born. Early in his childhood his family left Galveston and moved to what is known as one of Houston’s roughest and toughest neighborhoods – the Fifth Ward. Sadly, at the age of 14, Jay’s mother died from a blood clot and fluid in her lungs. This was a devastating blow to Jay but life was not through with him yet. Tragically, three months after his mother passed away, his father died from a heart attack. Jay was an orphan and he ended up sleeping on the streets until he was picked up by the police and placed into foster care. At 17 however, foster care expired and once again it was back to the same streets.
After finding work, he saved money and bought an old car that would also serve as a home. One day an outreach pastor named Dennis Rogers heard he was sleeping in his car, so he took him in and under his wing, Rogers later connected Jay with boxing champion Evander Holyfield (Real Deal Records), and both men helped Jay transition from a teen in the streets to a man with a vision for his life. Jay often says, “it’s funny how God took one dad away from me and gave me two. It started my new beginning, my new life.” This new life included a record deal with Evander Holyfield now defunct (Real Deal Records) which lead Jay Smith to working with producer Lil Ronnie who submitted multiple songs by different writers for placement and out of all the songs submitted Smith song was picked for the season 10 of American Idol television series for its winner Scotty McCreery. The single debuted at number 32 on Billboards Country Charts and peaked at number 11 on Billboard’s Hot 100 I Love You This Big was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on November 11, 2014. Smith, eventually signed a deal with Nashville based record company Average Joes Entertainment publishing division Average ZJS Music Publishing/Tzadik Music Publishing that lead to Hip Hop star Colt Ford to enlisted Jay Smith to write “Happy In Hell” which features Grammy Winner/Multi-Platinum selling group Boys II Men and “Dancin’ While Intoxicated” (DWI) featuring Low Cash Cowboys and Red Neck Social Club for his Declaration of Independence album which debuted #1 on the Billboard Country charts and #2 on the Billboard Hip-hop charts.
