Children’s Hunger Fund Says Churches Must “Rethink Mercy”
Los Angeles (PRWEB) March 31, 2014 -- Children's Hunger Fund Founder and President Dave Phillips issued a challenge on Friday for churches across the country to rethink how they serve the poor. Pastors and church leaders will explore Phillips’ challenge at the Rethink Mercy Conference set for April 11, 2014 on the campus of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.
“We Christians have spent too long on an in-house debate about whether we best serve the poor by providing food or by giving the message of the gospel,” says Dave Phillips. “The biblical answer is both. We’re calling on churches to implement gospel-centered mercy ministry in their communities.”
The Rethink Mercy Conference will feature a Pastors’ Roundtable discussion on these issues, as well as keynote messages by Dr. Al Mohler, author and President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Dhati Lewis, Lead Pastor of Blueprint Church in Atlanta.
Dave Phillips will host the event, which immediately follows the Together for the Gospel conference.
“At Children’s Hunger Fund, we've launched Rethink Mercy to equip local churches around the world through training in the biblical principles and best practices for reaching out in mercy,” says Phillips. “We hope all church staff and lay leaders will make an effort to be there. To date, over 1,500 leaders around the world have been trained through Rethink Mercy Equipping, a one day workshop.
“We want to provide churches with the tools and the food resources to reach out to their neighborhoods. The churches are already in their community, they know who’s struggling and suffering. And if they don’t know them, they are the best ones to reach out. At Children’s Hunger Fund, we want to come alongside these leaders and help them as they serve the hurting families. This is the start of a movement and we invite all gospel-focused churches to rise up and to join in,” concludes Phillips.
