Children’s museums support approximately 57,000 jobs in the United States, with 41 percent of those found outside museum walls.

According to new research released by the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM), children’s museums contributed $5.5 billion to U.S. economic activity in 2016. This research is shared in the second volume of ACM Trends Reports, produced in collaboration with New Knowledge Organization, Ltd. These reports share findings from ACM’s study on the economic impact of children’s museums, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
“Every children’s museum leader can tell story after story about how their institution has a positive impact on the lives of children and families in their community,” said ACM Executive Director Laura Huerta Migus. “Our new research on the economic impact of children’s museums will help our field tell the story of our financial impact as well, on the national, regional, and local levels.”
These three reports comprise the second volume of ACM Trends Reports. The reports explore the economic impact of children’s museums as it ripples across spending and jobs. They offer practical information for children’s museum leaders to share the story of their impact with stakeholders, funders, community members, and more.
