Seña's 2009 vintage is re-released as a special library vintage for connoisseurs and collectors to enjoy
NEW YORK, July 21, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- As part of Seña's 25th Anniversary celebration, the Chilean icon wine estate is reintroducing its globally-acclaimed 2009 vintage. This limited collection of the 2009 vintage is being made available through the family's historical library to invite wine lovers and collectors around the world to be part of Seña's inspiring journey and enjoy its graceful aging. Showcasing an incredible evolution, this wine is released after being cellared for more than a decade.
Established in 1995, Seña is Chile's first icon wine; the result of a brilliant collaboration between globally recognized winemaking icons Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi. The lush terrain of Chile captured the curiosity of Mondavi, who traveled to the area for research in the early 1990s. After meeting Chadwick, the two felt a connectedness within their shared values and decided to create the first icon wine of Chile, serving as a pioneer within its terroir in the Aconcagua Valley: modeled on a Bordeaux style, with a Chilean soul. During the quarter century since its inception, Seña has achieved a perfect 100 score and solidified itself among the top-tier wines of not only South America, but the world. The current release, Seña 2019, marks the 25th vintage of this iconic, pioneering wine.
"We are extremely proud to be able to offer the 2009 library release of Seña to our collectors," notes Viñedos Familia Chadwick SpA Owner Eduardo Chadwick. "As part of our 25th anniversary, we wanted to do something special to mark the occasion, and further illustrate Seña's incredible ageability through this 10-year retrospective and rightful place among other world-class wines."
The Seña Vertical Tasting Tour, beginning in Asia in 2011 and continuing on to London, Zurich, and five major cities in China in 2012, was designed by Chadwick to showcase Seña's aging potential. Different vintages of Seña (including its inaugural 1995 vintage) were shown side by side with matching vintages of the world's most famous wines. The results scored Seña within the top five wines of each site on the tour, with the 2009 vintage achieving top honors in Zurich. Seña has not only proved its exceptional quality on a global stage, but demonstrated its ability to maintain that quality over time as the wines age.
The 2009 vintage was a warm and early season. It began with an early bud break in very healthy conditions and a very homogeneous flowering in line with the historical dates. January was the warmest month of the season. The viticultural team's strategy of precise irrigation successfully managed to look after the vines' hydration and protect the fruit with correct canopy management, ensuring smooth veraison progress. The trend of warm temperatures continued and encouraged an excellent ripening of the grapes that particularly favored the Carménère variety, reaching a perfect phenolic maturation in balance with good levels of sugar accumulation. Harvest began two weeks earlier than the historical dates to deliver a beautiful wine, dense and powerful, with great concentration and richness, fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity.
"Seña 2009 is a very complex wine that is showing beautifully today, after more than ten years of aging," explained Francisco Baettig, Seña's Technical Director in November, 2021 ahead of the release. "The color shows its natural evolution, which still retains its red hue. The nose unveils multiple layers of spicy notes, subtle oak, chocolate, tobacco, and cigar box, while amazingly fruity as it opens up, with hints of ripe raspberry and cherry. The mouth is round but shows vivid acidity on the finish. This vintage displays excellent density and length with great structure and perfectly ripe tannins, alluring with a soft and silky mouthfeel. Ready to drink now or hold for five more years."
Seña is a wine worth celebrating, and collectors around the world will, once again, have the opportunity to add the 2009 vintage to their portfolio of special bottles and commemorate the 25th anniversary of the world-renowned estate. The 2009 vintage of Seña will be released with a special label, and will be available in a special wooden collector's box at a suggested retail price of $150.
